To ask how much you have left after all outgoings apart from shopping?

Carlie97 · 10/05/2026 14:06

I'm thinking of going for a new job but with one I have an interview for, I'd be left with around £240 per month and I'd need to get shopping out of that (food, cleaning products, toiletries). There's just me. I currently have £500 left at the end of outgoings and can afford the luxuries. I'm scared I'll miss the nicer things in life, but I'm so miserable and feel so taken for granted in my current role. Plus it's a current 2 hour commute, whereas this would be a 10 min bus journey or 30 min walk.

No idea.

Enough that I don’t ever really think and certainly don’t worry about it

I'm just me and I spend somewhere between £200 and £250 a month on food, cleaning stuff and toiletries. I then have more left over for other fun stuff. I would be very nervous if all I had was £240 for those essentials and nothing else besides.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/05/2026 14:11

So a new job that pays less and further commute ?

why would you take this ?

Nimblethimble · 10/05/2026 14:11

That seems very tight. Can you keep looking for something nearer your current salary?

Pearshapedpear · 10/05/2026 14:13

How much will you save on travel OP?

NoWordForFluffy · 10/05/2026 14:13

Yes, you are BU, as there are 100s of threads asking this very same question, some from very recently. Nobody else's circumstances will help you to decide what's best for your family.

After all outgoings, including car fund and savings for Xmas / birthdays /kids when get married/move out/have a baby etc we have
600 each pocket money
500 for fun stuff like meals/days out etc
1000 in holiday fund xx

Cone along way as when kids were little about 100 between us! X

BMW58 · 10/05/2026 14:17

I'm solo and have about 1.5k pm for food or savings.

Does that help?

Whereas your post…..!

LifeBeginsToday · 10/05/2026 14:19

That seems far too tight. I have about £300 a month just for me but that is after all bills, food and essentials.

Why did you reply then? Waste of your precious time if you ask me. Some people are odd!

Have you discussed WFH arrangements? With potential new job

Edited

It would be in the office all the time and that doesn't bother me. I wouldn't be negotiating wfh as the commute is short and doesn't cost much, I could easily afford it.

Walking to work has a massive value imo. Is there room for progression, so you could supplement your lifestyle with savings short term? Would the extra time this new job will give you (3 hours PER DAY) give you chance to cut down some expenses, shop in bulk, lose the car, quit the gym as walking, side hustle?

It ought not be a "no", but things will be tight. For me it would probably be worth it, but everyone is different.

MCF86 · 10/05/2026 14:25

I spend that on food/cleaning/toiletries for me and a six year old. We get fed by grandparents x2, and he's at his dads EOW so I'm not doing big fancy meals every night either!
I think it's possible for one person to live on, but likely quite miserable.

Theuntold · 10/05/2026 14:26

WFH is critical to you.

Does the new job offer this?

Because they took the time to reply and it made me realise that perhaps I need a bit more money to be comfortable.
