To think people insure smaller risks before bigger ones?

It sometimes feels like people are very quick to insure smaller, more immediate things like vet bills or appliances but less likely to have cover in place for bigger risks like death or critical illness. I can understand why - smaller things feel more likely to happen, but it does make me wonder whether priorities are sometimes a bit skewed.

Do they ? How do you know?

Not me. I have insurance on my life, home, car and pet. I often don't bother with the extended warranty thing on cheapish appliances I've bought because filling in the forms is a faff and I can't be arsed.

Not really. You're legally required to have car insurance, your bank will insist in life cover as a condition of a mortgage. I think the big risks are covered by people. Whereas most people don't have pet insurance (30% of owners have insurance in Ireland, and I'm sure that includes a high percentage of those that get a free year and then don't renew).

Why do you think this?

Likewise, I have all the big things like fully comp car insurance, top of the range house buildings & contents cover, life insurance, permanent health insurance, full foreign holiday cover insurance, etc., but I've never had any pet insurance nor ever insured any household appliances. I regard anything I "can" afford such as a new fridge or a vet visit "self insured" from savings etc., but anything big which I couldn't readily afford is fully covered by insurance.
