Just that really. I know many organisations working with vulnerable people rightly insist on employees having a DBS done. Surely, with the access local councillors get to society's most vulnerable, they should, at the very least, have a DBS done to enable them to stand for election. This would reassure the public a little, at the voting stage, that the person they were voting for didn't already have a verifiable record of dubious doings. On being elected they could then undergo more enhanced checks. Civil servants with no or far less influence/ access to sensitive information have to undergo proper vetting, so I can't understand why it wouldn't be the case for local politicians. I've had a google and it looks like some councils do this, but I am wondering why it isn't just standard practice.
