Someone IS living next door to me

Searchingforananswer2023 · 10/05/2026 11:13

House next door converted to a HMO and I posted before as I was worried.

I've been hearing footsteps going up and down the stairs for a while and thought it was my imagination. No windows are open, no lights are ever on there is no sound of a toilet flushing and the bins are never put out.

Just after midnight a car was running outside my house across the drive. I turned on my camera and the door next door opened to accept a takeaway.

I have been off work for a week and have not seen anyone enter or exit.

Unbelievablely strange

Someone is living in a place this is normal

This. 🤷‍♀️🙄

I think OP means that someone in her household is regularly in the garden at night, so they would know if the neighbours were coming in and out

Oh 🙄

How can you tell if your next door neighbour’s lights are on or off at midnight?

They have an extension and the kitchen is in the back. When the extension is lit up its like Blackpool illuminations in the garden.

@Searchingforananswer2023 who is in your garden it's not clear from your post.

If they're going in your garden, that's a problem! I can see your worries about the HMO but this seems a whole other kettle of fish.

Someone is in your garden at night? That's worrying. Have you a camera out back?

Yes, camera I'd at the back and they've been over the fence so many times the panel has fallen off the gravel board and broken

wait, what ?!? Someone IS IN YOUR GARDEN AT NIGHT !!!

lead with that, that’s really ODD - who and why ?

Yes there is an open entry at the back and another one two doors down. Neighbours are removing trees and foilage and tearing down sheds so there is no hiding place for whoever is garden hopping at night.

OP posts:
BowlCone · 10/05/2026 19:04

Maybe they work nights?

I honestly don't see anything "unbelievably strange" at all, except for you monitoring your neighbours perfectly ordinary domestic activities so closely. Honestly, why do you care so much?

It’s an HMO with unknown neighbours. I would also be worried.

Somersetbaker · 10/05/2026 13:12

It's probably a cannabis farm, all the windows will have blackouts, so people outside don't see the growlights. One person living there to water the plants who fancied a pizza.

No cannabis farm. The house had no curtains in any room. You can see straight in front and back

I'm not sure who is in the garden, I just have a broken fence panel. People are always out around here at night, burglaries are high as is car theft.

I saw a man trying car doors on the road last year.

OP posts:
Roads · 10/05/2026 19:12

I'm not sure why you seem more concerned with the coming and goings of quiet new neighbours than the fact people are accessing your garden nightly?

Searchingforananswer2023 · 10/05/2026 19:12

For everyone saying I'm nosey and I should get a life, I am aware of my surroundings and this house is a problematic house historically. Everything the owners did was at night. Moving cards, bringing in car parts at 3amin the morning, switching number plates etc

This is such a weird thread.

It really is.

A house being historically an issue means nothing when new people have moved in.

SandwichSuperstar · 10/05/2026 19:13

Searchingforananswer2023 · 10/05/2026 12:04

Definitely not squatters, but how can you be up until midnight with no lights on? If you are getting a takeaway why not put out rubbish? The weather is great for drying, why not hang out your clothes and open a window to air the house?

I'm not nosey just aware of my surroundings as both properties either side of me have been empty for two years and someone is habitually in my garden at night.

How can you be so definite about them not being squatters?

If they have no electric, you won't see any lights and they won't be able to use the washing machine even if there's one on the premisis.

Also, many squatters aren't generally known for being particularly tidy.

I can do nothing about people in the garden, all my neighbours have the same issue as me

The front door is a composite door and the back door and windows are secure, no squatters.

deeahgwitch · 10/05/2026 19:19

Surely you can inform the police if people are entering your back garden at night and you have film footage of it ?
I’m not in the UK though.
I know in other countries children have been rescued because neighbours spotted something amiss.

Well just ignore them then.

They're not doing you any harm by not using electricity or line drying their washing 😳

The only problem here are the garden hoppers, but you've said that's a problem for everyone anyway.

I don't think hyper focusing on this is doing you any good.

No, what's weird is you posting about not hearing people flush the toilet when people are actually breaking into your garden on a regular basis yet you apparently haven't thought to call the police Confused

EmeraldRoulette · 10/05/2026 19:25

@Searchingforananswer2023 Right, now you have clarified, I get it

You will get lots of sneering comments from people who have never lived in this situation

Item one will be drugs, item two will be stolen cars. It sounds like you know the drill. They are never seen so no one can ever describe them.

I won't suggest moving because frankly everywhere is becoming this dodgy

Do you have a decent alarm system on your house?

it might be worth reporting to local authorities though - you never know. Sometimes it makes these people at least be more discreet about what they're doing.

these people usually move on pretty quickly, but obviously they're attracted by HMOs.

Thank you for the common sense reply. The family who own the house are known t police. I'm not moving, as I'd never get as much space for the money. My house is very secure so I am lucky.

A few years ago I nipped to the shop, forgot my keys but it didn't matter as DS was at home.
Got home, knocked on the door. No answer, knocked again. Then the builder who was doing work next door appeared and said
"You won't get an answer, no one lives there"
I told him I did! We were putting bins out, and if he'd bothered to look then the window upstairs was open. It always is. Bloody weirdo.
