I personally think it’s a lot of money to spend daily on a drink and it all adds up. I just get my free coffee from Waitrose.

But you have to buy something first.

Not anymore, they changed it last year.

ConnieHeart · 10/05/2026 12:07

Nobody can possibly give you permission without knowing your financial circumstances. If I could afford it and the coffee is really good I'd go for it. Otherwise, if it's spending money I could be having then I wouldn't

Jamesblonde2 · 10/05/2026 12:09

It’s your money OP. If you’re happy to spend £1k a year rather than making and taking your own. I’d rather have the £1k to spend on something else more fun.

Mossstitch · 10/05/2026 12:13

I bought a pod machine and a good quality flask cup that doesn't leak if thrown in a bag. The pods cost about 30p and taste just as good, if not better, than most chain coffee shops (I've tried most of them). Also taylors coffee bags are pretty good which i keep in my work bag for emergencies...........yes I have to have my coffee😂 then you can have a holiday with what you save, or whatever else you want to spend on 🤷

What about the savings from not going to the pub every week? Savings from not having a takeaway every week? Nobody ever adds up that over the course of a year.

What if ypu don"t go to pubs anyway? Are you not entitled to have a treat? Due to committments with my friends and I, we only go for dinner a few times a year. We are driving so we have no drinks.

If I took the savings from coffee and went on holidays, I would have to pay for 4 people. I would have to cut out cappucino for 4 years to have one holiday! Cappucino cannot be made at home and travel for an hour commute. You have to make the cappucino at home and drink it straightaway. If you are out of the house for 10 hours, when do you get to drink it? Also households are busy and you may not be left alone to sit and enjoy it.

You should spend your money on what gives you pleasure. If a freshly made coffee from a coffeeshop is your bag, then go for it. I love my daily coffee so much that I now enjoy my ritual of grinding the beans and prepping the espresso machine every morning for a perfect coffee. It wouldn't give me pleasure to spend £25pw on coffee made imperfectly by someone else.

ArtAngel · 10/05/2026 15:29

If you can afford it / are happy to allocate your disposable income to takeaway coffee and enjoy it, why on earth would that be unreasonable?

I make excellent coffee at home and never buy takeaway - I don't get takeaway deliveries , either. Just don't see it as a good value way to spend my money.

People spend on all sorts that I don't: scented candles, nails, spa days and treatments, magazines, premium toiletries and make up, Amazon Prime, Cheese Strings, keeping a pet and so on.

But I do spend on things that I KNOW leaves others aghast because it isn't their idea of a good way to spend time / money.

So if you are happy, and use a non-disposable cup to save our planet, none of anyone else's business.

Flamingojune · 10/05/2026 15:32

Absolutely! cafes and pubs need the business

Surroundedbyfools · 10/05/2026 15:35

It’s your life, it’s ur money and ur a long time dead so if u can afford and enjoy it crack on !! There’s ppl out there spending money on hard drugs so enjoy ur coffee

FlapperFlamingo · 10/05/2026 15:38

If you want to and can afford it then go ahead. Personally I used to take my own coffee to take on the train each day but save the small amount each day into an account and it adds up! I liked the feeling of transferring it over each time then spending it in one go on a big treat.

thank you all for your replies! Whether i can afford it I’m not sure, i mean i always could invest that £1500 a year 😄, also that’s a cost of a holiday! But I justify it as I have a long commute!

And that’s totally fine if you like it that way. My commute is 1hr15 and I take a large picnic flask with coffee in it. I know people judge that but it’s because I can’t afford not to. But it’s an option if you’d rather save the money.

Mary46 · 10/05/2026 15:48

If it makes you happy op. I like a few coffees a week too as I dont go out much. Its a nice treat in the week

singthing · 10/05/2026 15:54

I am massively on the side of invest/save it, as your habit seems such a transient, pointless thing to spend money on (with v easy alternatives), but also because now it's not even really any sort of a treat for you, it is just what you do every day, as normal.

So the bar for treating yourself has been raised up a notch, which means everything just starts costing more.

I would rather that £1500 you are spending now went into my savings and helped me to accelerate my plans towards early retirement (ironically where I can go for coffee and it will still be a treat!).

(Re-reading that, maybe I'm a jam tomorrow person while you are a jam today one? Neither is intrinsically better or worse.)

intrepidpanda · 10/05/2026 16:00

Th are plenty 'waste' their money on other things. (Chocolate, takeaway, brands, pets, alcohol, vapes) so why not coffee so long as you aren't pleading poverty to anyone.

Monty36 · 10/05/2026 16:05

Very trendy of you. Or is a bit old hat now ? The coffee in hand etc..
