To hate people having full conversations on the phone on the train

On a three hour journey. One woman was on the phone to her colleague for about 30 minutes. Hung up: and now on another call.

another woman on the phone having a drawn out conversation.

i don’t want to hear peoples ongoing chat.

What about people who have conversations with people they are travelling with?

Smartiepants79 · 09/05/2026 13:08

Unless they are on speaker phone or you are in the designated quiet carriage then you are being unreasonable. You could have two people sat next to you having a nice long chat.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 09/05/2026 13:10

Then put in headphones and don’t listen. I couldn’t imagine wasting energy over other people just existing as normal people around me. Talking on the phone to other people while traveling is a normal thing to do.

YANBU

It’s different to two people having a chat because of the two way nature. I have this if DH decides to work from home.

’Yeah … Yeah … (Pause) Yeah I told James to make sure that … hmm. (Pause.) Did he? Oh, OK. Well in that case I suppose … (Pause) I think probably the best thing to do going forward is to … sorry, yeah, going forward we probably need to involve the buyers and … (Pause) Did Dave tell you that? Oh yeah he did … haha … Dave always does. Not surprised! Ha! (Pause.) I’ll ask Mary to check that. See yeah the thing is I know he’d prefer to meet then, that’s fair enough, but he needs to accept that … (pause) I think so yeah … possibly, possibly, haha.’

Meanwhile I no longer want ears.

Greedybilly · 09/05/2026 13:25

I hear you OP - people are very annoying on trains. Put a podcast on and ignore.

For some reason nowhere near as irritating: they tend to speak at a quieter level

Forgot to bring headphones!!! I personally think a long phone convo on a train is really inconsiderate to fellow passengers: we don’t all want to hear your business.

a quick call: fine; but don’t need to hear an entire saga

I love listening to other peoples sagas.

I sympathise. Where I live I can’t go out for a walk without hearing men shouting into their phones. It’s incredible. I’ve no idea why they are so loud. I wish phones were just for texts.

It hasn’t always been. And some of us miss being able to go places without people yelling all around us.

But it is normal now. And who said they were yelling??

It’s been decades, time to get over it!

I know what you mean about yelling. But honestly.. where I live they are so loud, it’s truly astonishing. Peaceful walk now difficult to achieve, solely due to this. Booming voices as if their phones are plastic toys and actually they are trying to address someone 50 yards away.

If people were more considerate of others we wouldn't have to.

Are you telling me you've never heard anyone talking into a phone far more loudly than they need to be? It happens all the time. And just because things become 'normal' doesn't mean people have to accept them as OK. Society's become very selfish, should we all be accepting that as 'normal' too?

UhOhRatPoo · 09/05/2026 16:19

I live in a very multicultural area. I’ve noticed that certain nationalities are always talking loudly on the phone when out and about- the main ones I hear sound like slavic languages. Both male and female. My Colombian cleaner is never off the phone, she chats away to her daughter for hours on end via her headphones while she works (I have no issue with it).

I often think to myself “what on earth do they all find to talk about?”.

By comparison the British are traditionally much more guarded in public, so it stands out to us more when people do talk loudly on the phone, and also it is a different bystander experience when you can actually understand the conversation.

It’s inconsiderate in your opinion, not everyone’s. Talking on the phone in public where it’s not quiet anyway and lots of people are talking, is not inconsiderate. Maybe you should work
on being more tolerable of others.

Sounds like I hit a nerve there…

YABU
would you prefer everyone in silence staring at screens? this may be their only chance to catch up with their friends. It’s nice, if it bugs you get headphones nd listen to music

Tessisme · 09/05/2026 17:49

Many people seem to talk quite loudly on the phone. It’s not the same as an in person conversation at all. DP always sounds as if he’s trying to project his voice to the person’s actual location🤣 Anyone remember the Dom Joly sketch with the giant phone?

Flamingojune · 09/05/2026 17:52

I agree its annoying but i would just be grateful it wasnt some tinny electronic sound or a face time etc.

MabelRoyds · 09/05/2026 17:52

@Tessisme yes Exactly! Absolutely unaware! I wish it were funny, but there’s a constant stream of them, the Loud and Oblivious crew, we call them.

What about people who have conversations with people they are travelling with?

It is a known fact that someone on the phone and two people having a conversation are not perceived in the same way at all.

It's like driving whilst chatting with the passenger and chatting on the phone. Totally different.

Nope, ironic coming from someone being quite sensitive though!
