Chinese massage - helpful… or not?

I’ve never had any kind of massage, but I’ve been having a few ‘knots’ in my neck and shoulders for quite a while now. A friend recommended her Chinese acupuncturist/masseuse and I’ve made an appointment.

I’m feeling a little apprehensive and would welcome it if you all could share any experiences. Anything I need to bear in mind or watch out for? I’m just having a massage, not acupuncture.

YABU - no way, don’t do it
YANBU - go ahead, it provides relief

I'm not 100% sure what you'll get. Some use glass jars, light a flame in it the stick them on your back and your skin gets sucked into the jar. Abroad, I had a Chinese massage but I was sitting forward on a chair. I had a towel on my back and the massage was through the towel/clothes. Maybe check with your friend if its a massage where you undress or not (normally underwear is left on, but sometimes your bra is unclipped). They might rub a liniment/medicated cream on you too.

I've had a Thai massage where you stay fully clothed and they roll you around and stretch you into all manner of positions.

I forgot to say, you might feel achy the following day, so take paracetamol or ibuprofen if you are.

I had a deep tissue back massage by a sports masseur/masseuse.
It hurt but worked. I'd try that.

I think it will be good, I’ve had Chinese massage/cupping, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, etc massages and all are great, if it’s a good masseuse.

If you’re concerned about too much pressure, let them know and they will check with you that’s it comfortable or too much.

I've had deep tissue, oil and Indian head massages. They do help with tension in your muscles. I get it particularly in my neck, shoulders and legs. They usually check if the pressure is suitable for you, but do speak up if it is too much; don't suffer in silence!

It is a bit worrying when you're going for your first massage, as you don't know what to expect. Just explain this to the masseuse and they will talk you through it. Make the most of it and enjoy yourself, OP!
