AIBU to want to cancel our holiday after root canal problems?

AIBU to want to cancel our holiday?

I have had a flare up of toothache. After many dentist visits I had the first stage of a root canal treatment on Tuesday. By Friday I was back in pain, with an infection underneath the tooth. The dentist re-did the root canal filling. I won’t know if it has worked for a few days. It may become infected again, in which case I would need an extraction.

i am due to go on holiday, Corfu for two weeks, on Monday, in two days. I won’t necessarily know if it has worked before we fly, I could have another infection on holiday, and the stress of finding a dentist, being in pain etc

My husband is still keen to go. I am very anxious about it all.

We are insured, and would rebook somewhere when everything is sorted.

@Worriedtooth good that they'll pay out

It is such a worry, I know

I'm going through a lot with it at the moment, with a lot of cracked teeth from teeth grinding. It's a nightmare.

What did your insurer say? Will they actually cover this?

I had a root canal that was (unbeknown to be me) failing and I found out on a flight. Apparently a tiny particle of air had got in and as they pressurised the cabin it basically pushed down into my nerve.
I have a good pain tolerance but that was excruciating - and it then played up the whole trip and all the way home (we were in the arse end of nowhere over NYE, nearest dentist was a 6 hour drive from us).
Came home and my only option was to lose the tooth.

I definitely wouldn’t fly until either treatment is complete and had chance to settle or the tooth is gone (and you’ve had a bit of time for your gum etc to heal).

@FlowersInPots that's scary
You didn't know it was failing on you got on a plane? Now I'm scared to get on a plane.... had it been done not long before before the flight?

You can't go on holiday without letting your insurance company know about your treatment.

The chances are they won't cover you if you go.

Your husband sounds very uncaring.

I doubt this will be a popular opinion but if the tooth is at the back of the mouth I would just have it removed 🫣 I would cancel and re-book the holiday.

Me too.

Can you have the tooth extracted? If the root canal hasn't worked and there is infection then that may be the best option.
If you can have that done soon, you should be OK to fly in two weeks.

I can understand you not wanting to fly with an infected root canal.

When I had a root canal done in December, I found the procedure traumatic as I have a fear of the dentist but once done, I had no issues.
When you say you have had part of the treatment done - are you going back? Why was only part done - was it because of the infection? If you can get rid of the infection and have it finished it should be OK?

Op is flying in Monday not in two weeks

@EmeraldRoulettesorry for the delayed response.
And in answer to your question, no, it was the opposite. A very old (15 years) root canal that had degraded slightly without me knowing. I had no toothache, no issues at all until I was about 40 minutes in to a 4 hour flight and it felt like an electric shock through my jaw.

I’ve flown a lot and never felt any toothache because of a flight before but since it’s started a chain reaction of problems and I’m now minus 1 tooth, have had 3 fillings replaced and am due to have another filling taken out and replaced via root canal 😩

I’d look into having the tooth removed as root canals can possibly cause nothing but health problems down the road. Ideally get a biological dentist to do the extraction and make sure they remove every part of the root. Then look into having a biocompatible implant if you feel a replacement is necessary.
