to think that sparkling red wine is just a gimmick?

Dont waste your money. First couple of sips, fine. After that its flatter than an ironing board and just tastes like slightly crappy red wine. This is the M&S and Aldi versions, not prepared to spend more as not convinced at all! I just think someone put red wine through a soda stream when they were pissed and decided to push it at the next meeting!

I had a lovely one a few years ago but stupidly didn't take a note of the details. I'll give them a go.

GuineaPigWig · 08/05/2026 20:15

Sorry @PyongyangKipperbang , I love you from your various posts over the years, but ironically you have inspired me to try this exciting innovation. If it’s shit, I’ll just make a fizzy bolognaise.

PonyPatter44 · 08/05/2026 20:15

Nooo! I like it. Its the only red I can be bothered to drink. I didn't know they did it at Marks....

Katherineryan1986 · 08/05/2026 20:28

OH drinks the one by Jacob’s creek and we both think it’s lovely.

people who drink white wine have a choice to drink still or sparkling, why shouldn’t red wine drinkers have the same choice?

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 08/05/2026 20:39

OP I agree with you, once bought some sparkling red by accident and it was just weird. Didn't like it at all!

Minime22 · 08/05/2026 21:01

Sparkling Shiraz is lovely.

Bobloblawww · 08/05/2026 21:14

A good quality sparkling red in summer is spectacular. Maybe you’re just buying shit cheap wine.

Yum. Completely agree.

Sparkling burgundy was a thing we drank in our early 20's in Australia. Awful stuff, did not know it was even a thing this side of the world but I puked many a time because of it so it would be a no from me.

Strandas · 08/05/2026 21:20

It’s been around for decades, so hardly a gimmick. I’m not a fan personally, but maybe that’s because I haven’t found one I like yet.

CraftySeal · 08/05/2026 21:20

I think there are regions in Italy, Portugal and even Australia that have been producing sparkling reds for over a hundred years, so it's not especially a recent gimmick. But I suppose there's also a reason sparkling red isn't more widespread.

mondaytosunday · 08/05/2026 21:23

You can’t keep
it once opened - I think the exact same about a large bottle of suds. So all in one evening or don’t bother.
I’ve not tried it though but I will!

Redheadedstepchild · 08/05/2026 21:39

I was once handed a bottle of sparkling red over the balcony partition when I lived in the old flat by a French couple who only came here for a few weeks in the summer and at Christmas.

I couldn't work out out whether the gesture meant, "Thankyou for being such a lovely neughbour, keeping an eye out for our holiday home whilst we're not here, and generally being so adorable! Please accept this small token of our esteem."

Or,

"We leave for Paris tomorrow and civilisation. This stuff is bloody awful. You may as well have it, as you have no palate, Englishwoman, and Marie Claude bought two bottles by mistake thinking it must be white because of the cork."

Thats an issue I have found, you cant even keep it over an evening. It seems to be either chug it down or dont bother. The M&S one went flat in under half an hour.

Fair point. Perhaps I should say "A gimmick for UK supermarkets".

Bracchetto (Italian sparkling red wine) had a moment about 25 years ago. It was alright- closer to champagne style than Burgundy.
Cinzano Rosso is YUK!

If it’s the 8 pound bottle, then yes.

Tbf I agree. £8 is relatively cheap, and in my opinion the M&S one is pretty shit. I like a sparkling red but not that one.

I think it’s reasonable to point out that you can’t judge an entire category of product by a single, cheap option.
