New food bins

Will you be using the new food caddies & bins? Sick to death of my kitchen & garden resembling the local recycling centre. I do recycle most stuff & have regular trips to the tip; but even then one local authority varies from the next one in their recycling policies, so it all seems a bit.futile

Absolutely not! They’re revolting. I’m not having rotting food festering on my kitchen counter! It’s going in the bin by the back door where it belongs!

GinToBegin · 07/05/2026 21:23

Our council brought them in at the end of March. I can’t say I’m wild about having two new rubbish receptacles, but them’s the rules now. DP, on the other hand, is very enthusiastic; he was very impressed by the amount reported as having been collected and processed in week one and the fact that it all goes for energy production.

Blimey what on earth are you doing. It doesn’t rot. The caddy that lives in the kitchen is tiny. The bag is taken out far quicker than a black bin is emptied. Mine lives under the sink and I get it out to put choppings straight in. No rotting anything.

Clafoutie · 07/05/2026 21:26

Some people seem to be unaware that not everyone lives in a place where they can just pop outside to their bin. Not so easy for example if you live in a high flat with no outside space, and also less easy when you have a tiny kitchen. I’m not suggesting people shouldn’t use a caddy, but lots of people are saying “ it’s no bother, I just go outside” etc, which is considerably less easy for others.

Agree 100%. I clean my tops and put out my rubbish more than once a day. That won’t change

I’m still struggling to see where all these extra pests are coming from, flies, ants, maggots, rats. The level of food waste is the same it’s just in a different bin

Exactly!!

Yuck! I don't doubt what you say is true, but I do find it surprising.

How would maggots underneath the bag get at the food? Was there a hole in the bag? Even then, flies would have to get in to lay eggs. Does your kitchen waste caddy have a well closing lid to keep them out?

Personally I didn't get on with the small kitchen caddy the council supplied. I use this small IKEA bin instead.
https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/hallbar-bin-with-lid-light-grey-90432194/

The lid fits well and the small size means it needs emptying every couple of days for us. This generally means there's nothing too malodorous in there.

I kept both caddies outside. I don't want food waste inside. (Prior to these new bins, I always put waste food outside immediately anyway). No tears in the bag and the bin was tightly closed. It was a couple of weeks ago when it was warm.

You are still allowed to do that….

I've tried using them twice. I even applied for a job emptying them before I knewhowgross they are. The first time was in the Summer and the kitchen filled with flies and the smell was horrendous, I never used I again and vomitted emptying it, we moved house and they have just instigated it here in March. I tried it and first time it was ok. Second time was Easter and they didn5 come empty it, house full of flies again. I put outside and it was emptied yesterday bu5 I'm not using it again. I shall go back to using the compost heAp in the garden.

just make sure you don’t put any meat or dairy scraps into your compost heap whatever you do!!! Only certain things can be composted, if you put anything else in, it will go very, very wrong!

Daisychainsandglitter · 07/05/2026 21:29

Absolutely not. Birmingham city council have not taken my recycling (cans, plastic and glass) in over a year so why they have sent us these food bins is beyond me.

SpringLambton · 07/05/2026 21:30

No food caddies here. Not sure why.

We've recently received a full height bin per household for glass recycling. I thought that meant the glass recycling point in the local supermarket car park would be scaled back. But no, I counted at least a dozen big new skips there last week. Must be a big area for 🍾!

sanityisamyth · 07/05/2026 21:30

What new food bins?

Firefly1987 · 07/05/2026 21:31

I'm worried about ants tbh. Had them in a few weeks ago because I stupidly left food out near the back door. Just got rid of them to then try the new caddy and got them in again. Might just be the position of the bin by the door though. I will try again.

Are you supposed to put egg shells and tea bags in this new bin?

RedRiverShore6 · 07/05/2026 21:32

We have had them for about 10 years, I ditched the council kitchen food bin and bought a Joseph Joseph one that screws to the inside of the under sink cupboard door.

The thought of collecting food waste in a cupboard 🤢

Another one who has had them for years. Now, if we go away to an area that doesn’t have separate food waste, it makes me feel sick to put a chicken carcass or bits of rotting vegetables into the main bin. And then it sits around for up to two weeks until the collection. Yuk. And yet, it used to be what we all did.

But didnt you out it in bin bags? We dot have this system so thats what we do..strong black bags in the general waste bin.

JudgeJ · 07/05/2026 21:35

TeaPot496 · 07/05/2026 15:38

It's not a problem, whatsoever.

Nor here luckily, we don't have them and no indication yet of when they'll be issued.

NotSmallButFunSize · 07/05/2026 21:35

I bloody love it - as someone else said, our main kitchen bin barely needs emptying and no longer ends up stinking from the food in it.

Lots of whinging around us though - people will complain about anything!

What are you doing? Had them for years and never, ever had flies.

I have this one with a compostable bag in. Empty it every day or so out into the lockable council
one.

It’s such a clean good system for all waste. They’ve just trialled all plastics. Hope that is next. There was next to nothing in our black bin when we did that.

FARMARKVAST bin with lid for organic waste, grey-green, 4 l - IKEA UK

FARMARKVAST bin with lid for organic waste, grey-green, 4 l Keep this bin on the kitchen worktop while cooking and cleaning up to collect organic waste and food scraps. You do not need a bag since the bin is easy to wash by hand after emptying it.

Eeyorefan · 07/05/2026 21:37

I’m in one of the councils where we won’t get them until at least September

Tarkan · 07/05/2026 21:38

We’ve had them here for years too. The only time I had issues with maggots was when there was meat in it and I forgot to put it out before we went away and came back to them. We’ve never forgotten to put it out again though.

I have a Joseph Joseph Totem bin so it has a little food caddy section inside it so I don’t need the council one inside the house and it doesn’t take up any extra space then.

The thought of collecting food waste in a cupboard 🤢

What is the problem? Our food waste goes in a caddy bag into the compost bin which has a lid under the sink and is emptied pretty much daily. Soooo much better than it languishing at the bottom of a bigger black bin for longer.

RedRiverShore6 · 07/05/2026 21:40

Where have people been putting their food waste, surely a small food bin is no different to food waste in a big bin with other waste

MaybeIamJustABitch · 07/05/2026 21:49

We had ours delivered the last week of March this year. The day they delivered was very very windy and most ended up in the middle of the roads!

They aren’t mandatory to use here and we have chosen not to as we have an allotment with a resident compost heap we add to.

Both bins/caddy’s are made use of for other purposes. Quite a few neighbours/ locals are also doing this, especially where there’s only 2 people in the household.

One free starter roll of liners with the smaller bin and then you’re on your own and buy the bags yourself.

i honestly don’t mind doing my bit, but promoting the benefits of it (per Borough council where we are) seriously does not reflect the ‘energy’ we supposedly get back due to it. Yes, every little helps, but……..

TheRealMagic · 07/05/2026 21:52

The comments saying that we shouldn't be wasting food anyway seem a bit disingenous. Every time I make a roast I fill the little caddy, but it's all peelings etc. I think the only way you could have no food waste to put in the bin is to eat entirely processed food.
