New food bins

Will you be using the new food caddies & bins? Sick to death of my kitchen & garden resembling the local recycling centre. I do recycle most stuff & have regular trips to the tip; but even then one local authority varies from the next one in their recycling policies, so it all seems a bit.futile

I’ve had one for 8 years, what the issue? It’s standard in most of the country already

spicedemerald · 07/05/2026 14:43

We’ve had them for at least 15 years here. I keep the small one under the sink and the larger one outside next to the other bins. Can’t see an issue.

DollopOfFun · 07/05/2026 14:43

We've had food caddies round here for years, I think I'd feel weird throwing food scraps in the kitchen bin now tbh.

SomedayIllBeSaturdayNight · 07/05/2026 14:44

Same, had one for at least 15 years, no drama.

CanaryLibra · 07/05/2026 14:44

My larger food caddy makes a great dog food storage bin, and the smaller one is really handy for when I’m doing a bit of weeding and dead-heading in the garden.

So yes I’m using them, just not as the council intended.

Flamingojune · 07/05/2026 15:10

What new food caddies?

rubyslippers · 07/05/2026 15:11

We’ve had a food waste bin for about 15 years
I use the recyclable liner bags and it’s easy
it gets collected once per week

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 07/05/2026 15:15

But you only live in one area so it doesn’t matter what any different area does.

Nourishinghandcream · 07/05/2026 15:17

Had the food caddies for years.
I remember my Ddad asking me how we got on with ours as they were about to be issued with them, he has been dead for 10yrs.
They are fine. Small one sits in the cupboard and the larger one outside by the bins. Biodegradable liners supplied by the council.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 07/05/2026 15:19

As PPs said, they’re not new, had them for years.
I don’t have a kitchen caddy though, just take out whatever peelings etc there are, immediately, to the compost caddy. Hardly onerous. And wash them out throughly, outside, when they’ve been emptied. No bother whatsoever.

NorthFacingGardener · 07/05/2026 15:20

I’m really enjoying mine. I have a little tub for my garden compost (veg peelings) and a little tub for food waste. I use old ice cream tubs rather than the council provided caddy. I take both of those out every day so they’re not hanging around.

I’m finding we don’t need to empty the kitchen bin as often and it doesn’t start smelling anymore.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 07/05/2026 15:20

I'm another one who has had the caddies longer than I can remember. It would seem really odd to put food waste in with the general waste to me now so don't worry OP you will soon get use to it.

Bokeitup · 07/05/2026 15:24

I've only just got one. There were maggots in it week one, so I'm not using it again.

OneTimeThingToday · 07/05/2026 15:26

I live in an area where they arent required due to the way waste is processed (all biological matter is removed during the process). It does feel wierd to be throwing out vegetable peelings etc.

But my parents area has a dreadful fox problem as theyve worked out how to break into the bins and spread the rubbish everywhere.

thinktoomuchtoooften · 07/05/2026 15:27

Absolutely not.

Yep, we do this. The compost caddy lives just outside the kitchen door in the garden room and peelings etc go straight in there.

Relatives in another part of the country had a green kitchen waste scheme years ago and the council were crap at collection and eventually announced they’d abolished it. Everyone was directed to throw their food waste in the black bin (!). Now they’re having to reintroduce it and bragging about how marvellous it’s all going to be. But they still haven’t actually rolled it out yet…

SilenceInside · 07/05/2026 15:35

Yes, no issues with it at all. No change in the kitchen and one small bin out the front next to the current wheelie bins that we’ve had for years is no problem. We have always had a compost caddy in the kitchen, now it’s an all food waste caddy, which is great.

If you are one of the people that get maggots in it, can I ask whether you would also have got maggots putting the same waste in the larger general waste bin?

I don't think anyone will make you use them if you would rather put the same waste in your general waste bin @Toomanyuglyplasticbins

Hankunamatata · 07/05/2026 15:37

Had food bin for years. Dont remember time without one. I brought myself an enclosed one and use green bags. Simply empty it every one or two days into brown bin

TeaPot496 · 07/05/2026 15:38

It's not a problem, whatsoever.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 15:38

Food caddies here for years too. I place a big rock on top of it so the foxes can’t get to it.

Maggots from my experience are if you leave the food in it too long.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 15:40

I have 2, 1 for kitchen and 1 for transferring it to outside for rubbish collection. Isn’t that what everyone has?

Justploddingonandon · 07/05/2026 15:41

Had them for years, no problems at all once I'd worked out how to stop the foxes getting into them.

They are new in many areas and operate in parallel with the existing bins.

Many people have received extra caddies because I think there is now a mandatory weekly food waste collection, and you are not supposed to put your food waste in with the garden waste.

The motivation behind this is probably not to leave food waste around any longer and reduce the amount of food waste people put into the landfill bin.

Fro me it looks largely a waste of time. For food waste I used to put in with the garden waste, never in the landfill. It is a bi weekly collection, so if I had something I do not want to rot for 2 weeks in the bin I would either bag it up in compostable bags or bag it up in compostable bags, seal it and freeze it until it can be thrown away.

The new caddies I don't get because they will cost more to collect, are far bigger than people need (we have 2x, one is massive - I always though the idea was to actually eat the food not throw it away but ho hum).

They would have been better off changing the cardboard collection (e have no specific caddy here so when the wind blows the cardboard goes all over the place) or separating out the existing plastic metal.

Unfortunately it is government mandated I think, so the local councils have no real choice on it.

Did you not use the special bags?
