Germans

I don’t mean to be rude as I know it’s different cultures but I am on holiday in Mallorca in a predominately German area. The German people seem to have no manners and they are very unfriendly. They are coming across as very, very rude. Slate me if you have to but I’m just wondering why?

German people tend to be very direct, which can come across as rude to British people. It's the way the language and culture works, they value being able to say things directly and honestly.

Of course, some are just plain rude. 😉

SilkSilk · 07/05/2026 09:55

What exactly are they doing to make you think this?

Potooooooooes · 07/05/2026 09:55

Oh dear.

First of all, they likely have enough friends already.

German bluntness is a real thing, now you know.

Rizzz · 07/05/2026 09:56

I don't think this thread is going to go well OP.

However, if you'd said 'Brits' instead of Germans, some people would settle in and slag them off all day.

OP, I am from a neighboring country to the Germans and can confirm that they are widely known in my home country as being incredibly rude, unfriendly, always complaining and generally negative. I am sure there are lots of Germans who are not, but unfortunately, I have to fully agree with you (in my experience). Where I live here in the UK, the Germans I know are also like this- constantly complaining about everything.

However, it might be worth pointing out that Mallorca is known to attract a very specific type of German tourist who tend to be quite unpleasant.

OverlyFragrant · 07/05/2026 09:56

They're direct. The language is abrupt.

Once you get to know them, most Germans are utterly hilarious.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 09:57

They’re direct. I’ve got a German cousin living in England and she’s direct but has toned it down over the years.

Reserving sunbeds by putting towels on them? Overnight. First thing in morning.

BrightBrightSunshineyDay · 07/05/2026 09:59

I love all the Germans I know, utterly hilarious people. Friendly and warm.
You just need to get to know them.

I don’t mean to be rude

It is clearly just part and parcel of who you are!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 10:00

I have a few years ago been on a boat ride in Crete with Germans and yes, they were rude. Pushing in. Didn’t seem to care about the other tourists, just about getting a tan.

HedgehogMugs · 07/05/2026 10:00

i was in germany over easter, and the germans were lovely, friendly and very helpful to me!

AgnesMcDoo · 07/05/2026 10:00

Maybe they are fed up with all the Brits drinking too much and demanding full English breakfasts.

One of my DM’s best male friends is a German man. He’s lovely. Not rude at all.

We are supposed to be similar to Germans so maybe that’s why the dislike, as we see ourselves in them.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/05/2026 10:03

You think all 83million+ Germans are rude?

If you're British, does that make 69million+ British people horribly xenophobic?

Odditea · 07/05/2026 10:03

Just whatever you do, don’t mention the war

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/05/2026 10:05

I work with German people and they are so lovely and friendly and I like the ‘get to the point’ attitude

My mum used to have German exchange students years ago. We showed them Allo and they didn’t find it funny and said so. Couldn’t understand why we laughed about it. They also were very upset/ashamed about the war and said they were taught about the holocaust in school.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2026 10:07

Allo Allo

We once booked a Teletext cheap deal, it was a long time ago, and when we arrived we were told that our hotel had been overbooked. The alternative was predominantly occupied by Germans which was fine with us, we had no real problems. One woman did try to tell me, in German, that the space on the beach in front of her room, about 50m away was occupied, it wasn't at all. She was shocked when I was able to tell her, in German, that it quite clearly wasn't and nor could it be reserved.

Notsureaboutthatreallyy · 07/05/2026 10:09

Straight talking is part of their culture . I like it! I’ve met loads of lovely Germans. Prefer them to Brits on holiday generally. They also have a similar sense of humour to us, dry. German lover here! 🇩🇪

NFLsHomeGirl · 07/05/2026 10:11

Americans are worse on holiday, especially to poorer staff in hotelw
