Expired passport not ok to vote

Veiledveritas · 07/05/2026 09:00

I've just had my expired passport refused as ID to vote. Aibu to think that is wrong. It still looks like me.

Try another station and/or have the Electoral Commision guidance ready?

That’s odd. If it still looks like you, it should accepted.

Out of date photo ID

You can still use your photo ID if it's out of date, as long as it looks like you.
The address on your ID does not need to match your current address.
The name on your ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.

https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/voter-id/accepted-forms-photo-id

Maybe ring up your council’s Election Office for advice, if you haven’t got anything else.

MyAutumnCrow · 07/05/2026 09:07

Sorry @Justyouwaitandseeagain, you already said that!

Needmorelego · 07/05/2026 09:11

They should accept it.
Go back and show them the link shared upthread.

Veiledveritas · 07/05/2026 09:15

No time to go back now and don't finish work til 9ish. I may go back later, really annoying! Just wanted to check rules hadn't changed.

You can't just go to another polling station as your name won't be on their list

OP should definitely complain to the local electoral office though ASAP as this is bound to affect other voters too

SerendipityJane · 07/05/2026 10:22

The thing is a vote is worthless. If you are prevented from voting - even unlawfully - you just suck it up.

Better luck next time.

Aliceinmunsnetland · 07/05/2026 10:55

I was reading on BBC today that for the next general election [by 2029] that valid bank cards with the holders name on them will be able to be used as ID.
The photo ID isn't pulling in as many voters then? Voter apathy due to sucessive rubbish governments I guess.
I don't vote for the above reason, each party are as bad as the other whether it's local elections or national.

How much do you think the courts awarded to the thousands of people who were unlawfully denied a vote in the 2018 European elections ?

I added it all up - every single payment,

Total was £0

Bin who do you think has been the best government on the last 30 years?
People vote, nothing changes, the country is going down the pan, repeat.
Millions voted Brexit, and if that wasn't a worthless vote with hind sight I really don't know what was?
I didn't vote so not complaining but even still.

Since when has it worked like that?

And how would the OP's name be on the list of more than one polling station? 😳

If you were against brexit and you had voted then maybe the outcome would have been different. Along with everyone else who didn’t bother. The only worthless people in the country are those who don’t vote.

O i will definately be going back after work. I'll take my driving license this time .

OP posts:
TokyoSushi · 07/05/2026 11:22

I'm a Presiding Officer (no elections in my area today) it should have been accepted.

You can only go to your nominated polling station. If you have time I'd call electoral services at your council and tell them so they can correct the error with the station otherwise they ight be turning people away unnecessarily/incorrectly.

HoppityBun · 07/05/2026 11:22

I can understand why they did it, but I have always opposed this requirement. Another ridiculous, unnecessary and unevidenced crowd pleasing restriction introduced by that twit Boris Johnson.

OP you might just be able to get down to your council and get and identification certificate. At the last election, I didn’t have a passport and I got one, although admittedly not on the election day. Nevertheless, today is a working day, the council officers are open and the voting stations are open until 10 pm. Good luck.

I prefer being called a bitch to being worthless thanks. 😄
I contribute my share to society with paying taxes, volunteering, and helping to do my bit to help the planet so hardly worthless in that respect.🙄
The worthless people are those who do sweet FA, lay in bed all day, drunks,
smack heads, dead beat parents, criminals and there are so are many more.
So putting the question to you as well - Who do you think has been the best government in the last 30 years?

NedsAtomicWheelieBin · 07/05/2026 11:26

Last time I voted the guy in front of me said that his passport was out of date - by 23 years! And they accepted it.

Actually it is possible to be registered at more than one polling station if you genuinely have two addresses (most commonly this applies to students, but there's probably some other situations), but agree this is unlikely to apply to OP. Not sure if you're allowed to vote in local elections at both (assuming different councils), but you're certainly not for general elections.

What’s this got to do with anything though? The OP has asked a question about photo ID and you and the other “voting is pointless” poster are answering a totally different question

Voters (eg students, as you say) can be registered at two addresses but, importantly, can only vote once.

You don’t vote. So you get zero say in what’s going on in the country, you get zero say on government policies, taxations, benefits, any of if. You don’t vote so you get no say. Seeing as you think voting is pointless and worthless, you should also think government policies are all pointless and unnecessary so why do you want to discuss governments? They’re nothing to do with you.

I will not get into a political discussion with the worthless lot who don’t vote.

We are talking to each other like anyone else on this thread. Sometimes threads go off at a different angle but we are still talking about voting / not voting.
