What happened to MLM's?

What happened to them?

AIBU to miss them? The boss babe quotes, the photos of the white mercs, the CEO of my own life job titles?

Where have they gone, and have they been replaced by anything?

Dear god the Independent travel consultants! Two of my baby group mum are involved in this and seem to always be posting from foreign locations saying how they made the money for this on commission and I’m mystified as to how people suck it up coz I seem to be the only one who knows how they paid for these holidays…and it’s not based on the commission they’ve earned….shocker!

@coulditbeme2323 the MLM “industry” is a shadow of its former self but it does (sadly) live on and there will always be those vulnerable to the fiction of time freedom and limitless earnings if they work hard and want it enough. There will always be those who don’t keep records of what it’s costing them to make the money do make. A lot of people who did fairly well in MLM (through lucky timing and a willingness to exploit people) have mutated into coaching, or rather recruiting coaches to recruit other coaches all selling some kind of system for “success”. The traditional MLMs like Younique, Arbonne are much diminished, even Forever Living, which is still discussed on the botwatch threads in Money Matters, has just closed its MLM business in the US, largely so the owners avoid prosecution for running a pyramid and lying to their recruits for decades.

As for Inteletravel, how does a “travel company” have a boom during COVID when there was a global ban on travel but people were ripe for recruitment 🤔 it’s almost as if their revenue is from recruiting people who pay to play isn’t it?! (Their recruiting arm is called PlanNet Marketing).

As for where the boss babes have gone, if they haven’t become coaches and they haven’t jumped from one MLM to the next while someone else pays the bills then most of them are back in the jobs they trashed (if they’re lucky). Some successful ones actually took out huge directors loans and are not just at zero profit, they’re in considerable debt. No wonder they’re quieter these days.

Damn, Elle Beau's Poonique blog seems to have been taken over by some kind of casino spam.

staringatthesun · 06/05/2026 14:36

Loads of travel consultants round here. Always want to talk to me about becoming a travel consultant but never once offered to helpe find a flight or holiday!

ohyesido · 06/05/2026 14:36

They’ve all joined OnlyFans and are struggling to make any money there too

Sazzles169 · 06/05/2026 14:38

Every ""boss babe"" is selling their own "digital products" i.e. PDF guides to things like workouts, recipes

I know an “independent travel consultant”
who absolutely exploded when I told her I’d just booked a holiday myself after she quoted a few hundred pounds more expensive.
I tried to explain that I could just book it myself for £xx
she responded that I wouldn’t be getting “her experience of stress free planning”
hmm, I literally sat down with a cuppa, my phone and booked it.

This is what I don't get with it, because I'm sure they're just looking at the same websites I can look at. And if I use them, I have the added misfortune of having to speak to another human.

I genuinely can't see the benefit in this. I know a couple of women who do it and kind of (rather meanly I suppose) waiting to see how long they keep trying to flog this before returning to a regular job.

Yep, it was very good. Sadly, the hilarious video of that fabulous woman (Grace, I think her name was?) drawing all over her face with Sharpie to prove Younique foundation didn't hide it seems to have vanished. She was absolutely brilliant!

She is not fabulous, she is an absolute monster

Darkspiderplant · 06/05/2026 14:24

What is utility warehouse? Someone I know on Facebook is involved in it. I can’t bring myself to message her to find out about it.

It's an MLM that claims to offer cheaper utilities like broadband and electricity, all combined into the one package, I think, but at the basic level, it operates just like every other MLM, with any profits going to the people at the top for the most part.

ThatCyanCat · 06/05/2026 14:57

ohyesido · 06/05/2026 14:39

I think you're probably confusing her with someone else.

At the time, there was a claim doing the rounds that Younique foundation was so good it could cover up Sharpie. A few sellers even did videos of themselves drawing on their faces and then covering it with the foundation. Needless to say, the videos were very sped up, often jumped and the drawings were rather delicate.

Grace (I think that was her name) went viral after doing a video taking the piss and proving it wasn't true. She wrote POONIQUE across her forehead, drew genitals on her cheeks and then started rubbing the foundation over her face with the brush they were always told to use. Obviously it didn't cover up the Sharpie, but it smeared it everywhere and turned her face blue. She was giving brilliant commentary all through and finished with something like, "You just end up with a blue face and look like a twat. I'm supposed to be going out tonight!"

Younique was furious and everyone else was pissing themselves.

I’m definitely not. I know her personally.

She was on Young Dumb and Living Off Mum, and she was a horrible bully

They’ve morphed into independent travel consultants where I am.

Same. It's very worrying actually.

Then one facebook friend who is now an 'independent travel consultant' periodically gets shit faced and screeches on fb about how none of her friends 'support her' and they are all cunts.

As sales pitches go, it's not exactly a winner, is it?

No- those posts are usually deleted around about 8 am the next morning though....

I'd find it fairly amusing on occasion if it were not for the fact she's old enough to know better; clearly has a problem; and is losing money (I assume) hand over fist.

Oh dear. On the one hand, I feel sorry for people who get sucked in, but on the other, the way they treat their friends and family as cash cows and get pissy when they say no really pisses me off. Luckily, I haven't had social media for years now, so I don't have to see it.

ThatCyanCat · 06/05/2026 15:17

I had a few people from school/uni whom I'd not seen or spoken to for years contact me when I had my first to try to recruit me into selling shit. One was aloe vera stuff and I can't remember what the other one was. I guess they saw a new mum and thought it was a good time to swoop. I was pissed off enough that the internet, on figuring out we had had a baby, had started bombarding me with stuff about weight loss and stretch marks, while my husband was getting stuff about affair websites. It was actually the worst time to approach me, although there would have been no good one.

I told them I hated sales and was shit at it, and that seemed to do the trick.

Travel consultants
utility warehouse- seeing this a lot.

also I suspect estate agents? I’m seeing a lot of boards going up with American style pictures of the estate agent alongside their name.

You mean realtors!! It always makes me laugh

I don't get why they're any better than a traditional travel agent for people who want that sort of service either.

CatBooksWineInThatOrder · 06/05/2026 15:43

I have two people on social media who have moved on from their original MLM scam to new ones. Apparently the products are better and the values of the companies align with their values. Sure. I also have a couple of the travel agent people on social media and I think they’re a bit MLM too.

ChrisInghamStoleMyBeanie · 06/05/2026 15:49

a woman I know is always involved in some sort of MLM, she’s currently used her young nieces dog dying as a way to advertise her shit hair oil and has also reposted how the hair oil cures hair loss from cancer 😬

Happyholidays78 · 06/05/2026 15:49

They've gone on to 'coaching', drives me crazy. Get a job! You will genuinely be better off with pension, paid holidays etc

Chrysanthemum5 · 06/05/2026 15:50

I used to have a coaching role and I get bombarded with adverts that are just people trying to get me to pay to learn how to set up as a life coach. Some are cheap some are very expensive and slick - but they are all a con
