Advice on potty training & what potty to buy?

pottypott · 06/05/2026 12:21

I am potty training my 2 year old next week and have no idea what kind of potty to buy?

For context he is quite tall for his age and wears 3 - 4 year old clothes.

Im not sure how to start, so I just pop him in a potty?

He does watch me and his dad go to the toilet and whenever he does a poo he says "poo" and lets us know to change his nappy. So I assume based on that he has some awareness.

Thanks in advance x

The IKEA potty with the removable insert is the best one. It has a high front

It’s been a long time since DS was small but I never bothered with a potty. Instead he had a little step and a child’s toilet seat. It worked fine for us.

Buy a step for the toilet and avoid the potty stage altogether. Why train them to shit in one thing, only to change the thing sometime later?

Potties were useful for me as when I trained my eldest two I didn't have a downstairs toilet so it took too long to get upstairs in the very first stages. Also potties mean you can use the method of watching them and sticking a potty under their bum when you notice they are going!

I liked the Pourty one that pours out the back.

I found My Carry Potty very useful home and for out and about. I also found it useful to buy a big bundle of second hand trousers off vinted for all the accidents

If you have an Asda near you OP, they have a baby and toddler event at the moment (until 17 May I think) and I'm sure they have discounted My Carry Pottys

I have an Eco Pourty (recycled plastic which was a win for me). The ERIC website was very helpful too. I started mine young using it part time and haven't fully trained him yet but have friends using My Carry potties so want to get one for out and about when we do it properly!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, much appreciated!

I guess I will be ordering a few and seeing which one works best.

So when they go out do you just take the travel one and not put them in a nappy?

The ikea one mentioned above is really good if you'll be using it in a bathroom that hasn't got a very big sink - much easier to rinse out the removable bit than trying to get a whole potty under the tap.

There are always people on these threads who go 'why bother with a potty at all, just use the toilet', but my experience of my two DCs is that one decided he was a big boy who uses the big toilet on day 3, and the other is still intimidated by toilets 4 months into being fully and reliably trained. But I'd recommend getting a little toilet seat for the big toilet from the outset so it's an option, alongside a potty.

DGS (2) doesn’t use a potty unless it’s an emergency. He’s got this step for the toilet. He’s able to get on and off independently using it. They’ve, also, bought a folding toddler toilet seat for when they’re out and about.
