To ask what you would think of a colleague posting on social media?

I have lost quite a lot of weight and started running. I initially started posting about running about a month ago on social media as a way to keep me accountable, but it’s sort of taken off and I’ve gained 1200 followers in a month. I’m really enjoying posting and sharing, and I’ve got quite a little community going with other women.

But I’m a little bit worried about my colleagues finding out. Not because I’m embarrassed of what I’ve posted (it’s mainly just photos or short videos), but because I feel like it’s quite cringeworthy until you hit a decent amount of followers. So what would you think if you found out about your colleague doing this?

YABU - shut it down, you’re an adult and don’t need to post.

YANBU - keep posting, it’s great.

You could always make your profile private.

But if you don't, re "it’s quite cringeworthy until you hit a decent amount of followers" - even the most famous (b)influencers started at zero. I suppose you could spend idiot money on getting 5k fake bot followers...

Really? This is about running. I had a colleague that had a Facebook page of incredibly racist views backed up by ill informed hogwash and I judged the shit out of him.

this is a hobby and I would either follow or not based on whether I was interested in the hobby. I think it depends on the social media platform. I think LinkedIn and running may be a bit misplaced but Instagram or something go ahead.

Yes my point was that if I was following the colleague already (assuming they are not also a very close friend) and they started posting a lot about something I wasn’t interested in I would unfollow. Not out of malice or jealousy or whatever but because it’s not my thing 🤷‍♀️

One of my colleagues does this. She’s nearly 50, is unbelievably fit and regularly competes in fitness competitions. I love cheering her on, I think she’s an inspiration. Keep doing it OP. I say this as someone who never posts anything on social media but I love seeing this type of content. You may inspire some of them!

A humble brag… about my 56 minute 6k run yesterday?🤣

OP I couldn’t even run 6k so don’t put yourself down. Everyone has to start somewhere, keep going and keep posting!!!

Not cringeworthy at all, not to do with the company, if I saw as your colleague I’d think - go you!

I agree! Go forth, enjoy and inspire!

You are doing something amazing - changing your life for the better. Keep posting and ignore the haters! x

There’s part of my that thinks:
”You do what makes you happy, you shouldn’t worry about what others may think. People are too quick to sneer.”
Theres another part of me that thinks:
”I know several people personally, relatives or schools mums I know, who regularly post videos to Instagram and have c. 500 to 2,000 followers… some do craft stuff and some actually do running videos… and they all looks totally tragic, like they’re think they’re famous, and I often wonder why their husbands or closer friends don’t have a word with them.”
I think it really depends on your honest motivation for doing it. If you’re building a community of people with a shared interest, then great. If deep down you like the attention and fancy yourself as being an influencer… well the world’s got enough of that crap.

Honestly don’t worry about it! I have like 300 followers on TikTok and am always posting videos of things I’ve made, crafts, baking, sets of nails that I’ve done (recently enrolled on a gel nails course so am practicing lots!) as long as the content isn’t offensive who cares what anyone else thinks!

filofaxdouble · 10/05/2026 19:19

Some of my colleagues and ex colleagues post a lot. I barely notice it but occasionally see things and think oh, they post.

That’s pretty much it. I don’t care. They’re not doing anything particularly impressive or despicable, just living. It has no impact on our working life.

Your colleagues won’t care, don’t worry about it.
