I’ve had really bad skin since I was about 12, and I’m now 45 and well into the depths of peri. My skin has never been great, putting it mildly, but for the last year it’s been shockingly bad. I have tried everything literally everything, prescription and non prescription over the years - lotions, potions, antibiotics, supplements, many of them at great cost and not making any difference at all, often making things worse.

Last year I was on holiday in the Canary Islands and made the mistake of wandering into a shop selling aloe products, and of course I wasn’t able to leave without buying anything, thanks to the sales lady. I came away with a bottle of pure aloe vera gel. It’s been in my fridge for months, and I remembered the lady in the shop saying that it was good for a number of things including acne. I had nothing to lose so I decided to try it.

3 weeks later, I have gone from being riddled with spots to not having a single one. This is actually a miracle as far as I’m concerned, as for the last year I’ve consistently had 10-20 angry looking spots on my face and needed to wear heavy makeup, and I can’t remember a time in the last 30+ years that I’ve had no spots at all.

My skincare routine is currently doing this every night:

  1. wash face with Cerave anti blemish cleanser

  2. use Simple toner

  3. spread a thin layer of aloe vera gel over my face

  4. moisturise - I’m using Elemis pro collagen as it seems to agree with my skin

Thought I’d share as aloe is super cheap and definitely worth a try if you’re plagued with persistent acne like me. I’ve still got loads of my holiday bottle left and I’ll probably order from that company again as I know it works, but other brands may work just as well. Just make sure it’s pure gel (mine is 98% aloe) and organic if possible.

In other words, you've joined a multi-level marketing cult such as Forever Living and are using Mumsnet to promote it.

I don't see a link anywhere, and OP hasn't even mentioned the brand of aloe gel she's using. Yes, she lists Cerave and a couple of other specific products, but I don't see this as a marketing ploy. Aloe is a fairly basic and affordable skincare product.

Thanks for sharing, OP. I haven't had much acne for a while, especially after giving up sugar and crisps for my health, but I remember how frustrating and physically painful it can be. I'll try to remember to use aloe if the need arises. It shouldn't hurt, at least, and we usually have some in the house anyway!

I always used a bit of witch hazel gel on zits in my youth. That and aloe vera are natural astringents.

It doesn't look like an advert - I read the post looking for the angle and it wasn't there.

It would be a rubbish marketing ploy if that was my plan as I didn’t mention the company name…pretty sure any pure aloe would do the same thing!

Yes it’s an astringent which is why I use a good moisturiser once the aloe has dried.

Aloe vera is well known for being very gentle and moisturising on the skin. How wonderful for you you. Acne is so upsetting. Thanks for the tip.
