Do other parents feel this overwhelmed by noise or is it just me?

I’ve got a 2yo and a 7yo (autistic) and our house is… loud. Lots of shouting, meltdowns, arguing between them etc. my 7yo can have screaming meltdowns that can last half an hour..

I’ve started to think I'm particularly sensitive to the noise..When they’re crying or shouting I feel so on edge, It’s not just “annoying” – it feels SO intense and overwhelming. I feel like im in fight or flight most of the time when im at home with both boys..

My partner doesn’t seem bothered in the same way at all – he stays calm even when it’s extremely noisy – which makes me wonder if this is just me? My ex was the same when we had a toddler.. the screaming and crying and whinging sounds reeeally affect me and he said it just didn't bother him...

Do any of you other parents get just as affected by your child's screaming and shouting like in a way that makes you feel like you can't take it?? It makes me so angry and I end up feeling unhinged! My partner stays as cool as a whistle... Thankyou in advance !

Yep I wear ear defenders

I am like you. It’s like a physical pain. I went to Legoland in April and almost had some kind of meltdown. My husband bought me some loop ear bud things, which help a little.

I am seeking an autism assessment. Other signs: I also tend towards rigid, inflexible thinking and don’t like plans to be changed.

I'm the same, also with an autistic DS. I find it unbearable when he has a friend over but obviously don't do that as it would be unfair and I'm just glad he has a friend that pops round.

He also randomly screeches sometimes, which is better than when he was younger and would shriek.

Drives me insane too. I’m autistic.

I don't like loud noise at all but it's worse when there are conflicting noises. Like, I hate people talking over the TV. I can't concentrate on reading if there's music or TV or talking in the background. My house is very quiet. My DC is generally pretty good and doesn't like loud noisy environments either, I wonder if it's nature or nurture.

Anyway I read this article a while ago. There are serious negative health impacts from noise, so you're not imagining it. BBC News - How our noisy world is seriously damaging our health

@LettuceAndCarrotsI am the same with “cross talk” and conflicting noises like the ones you describe.

Thankyou everyone! I feel so much better knowing I'm not alone in this... very hard to stay cool and be their 'co-regulator' when you are triggered so much by their screaming! 😅 I wear earplugs pretty much all the time now at home just to dampen it - very grateful I have them!

@NewHereAsking it's so hard isn't it? My husband and I swap regularly where possible when our son is melting down.
