London still the greatest

There pop up quite a few is London safe threads on here, but I just wanted to say something positive about it.

Spent the weekend there with my husband, and 5, 8 and 11 year old.

Great hotel, great show, great shops, great food, it still takes some beating!

I take it you have never had to wait outside Dalston Kingsland Station for the replacement bus service during weekend engineering works? That might change your mind about London.

Luckily london is a great place to hire a bike

@emuloc Wright of Derby From the Shadows at the National Gallery. It looks…. Interesting.🤨

Thank you for answering. You are right, it does look quite interesting. I was thinking about the Zurbarán exhibition that is on as well. There is so much to see, and do in London. Enjoy your Day.

Its a great place though we need a tourist tax.

I love visiting London, and would happily pay a tourist tax.

Dalston is hardly in the middle of nowhere! I’m sure there’d be lots of other options.

Only if you (and other city dwellers) are prepared to pay a tourist tax in National parks and coastal areas when you visit us.

Its a very walkable city as well

I'm so happy to see this - next summer I move back after 16 years abroad (plus one divorce!) I go back every summer and just fall in love again.

crackofdoom · 05/05/2026 12:36

I've fallen out of love with London a bit.

It's all the new shiny blocks of flats being sold as investments to leave empty, and the increasing gentrification.

More and more creative people are being priced out, and culture is increasingly something you consume rather than actively participate in.

But that's because I enthusiastically participated in the squatting and free party culture of the 1990s, and remember what it was like then. (London was also dirtier and more dangerous then though!)

We need to make like many other nations and keep museums free for UK citizens, but charge overseas tourists.

Absolutely agree.

MelancholiaOrRaving · 05/05/2026 12:48

We live semi-rurally, far from London. Years ago my daughter moved to London for an Art Foundation year at Chelsea. She had offers from various uni's and I wanted her to go anywhere but London! I'm not a lover of big cities and the thought of her being in the capital filled me with dread. Anyway, the day we moved her into halls I slipped a card under her duvet, saying how proud we were of her, and how she should make the most of her time in London and grasp all the opportunities she could, and boy did she!

She had a blast that year, and although she no longer lives or works in London, she and her husband visit often. We occasionally refect on how she cried when we left her in London and cried when we picked her up a year later. It really got under her skin, so I can see why people love it so much.

I dont understand the “so overcrowded” comment. I have never experienced feeling the whole city is overcrowded. Yes, on some tubes at peak times maybe, but not in general. Its a capital city - its meant to be busy!

I think they are referring to Oxford St at christmas !!

Unless its stuff nicked from their own country maybe...

And I still have my little flat in Angel from my first job 16 years ago that we rent out! Does that still make me a Londoner?

No but it explains the reference to Seven Sisters 😂

I love it, endless things to do and see and so vibrant. I got off the train at Brixton this weekend and just the smells and music were really evocative to me. Like being at a festival. So many interesting areas and little roads to wander down. Contrary to what a lot of people say, there are lots of quiet neighbourhood areas.

I also love other parts of the Uk like the Lakes and have lived in them but you can’t compare to London - it’s like comparing apples and avocados. I like the diversity that London has; socially, economically, the gritty urban vs the quiet and leafy and the convenience, particularly as you age with shops and cheapish public transport (or free from age 60).

Edited

It’s not free from age 60 anymore. State pension age now.

I was born in London and lived there for 60 plus years until moving away a year ago.
I love my new home and location and have zero regrets about moving.
I return to London every week and agree that it is a brilliant city.

It’s my lifelong home (I’m 66!) and I love it every day. I have a problem because I have to stop myself booking too many tickets for events or arranging too many activities. I tend to book and think about the logistics later but it usually works out

Ooh so do I, not helped by Central Tix sending me emails! There’s also the excellent Immersive Experiences like Cleopatra plus “Ramses: the Pharaoh’s Gold” and immersive art like Frameless. I’ve two plays and two immersive-type events coming up this month and am waiting for the new exhibition at the V & A which is a superb museum. Plus the David Bowie thing… And so many beautiful parks and gardens as well as architecture.

I live in a commuter town but it only takes an hour to get into central London

Bananalanacake · 05/05/2026 14:54

I live in Germany now but still have a flat in blackheath. I go about 4 times a year as I love the museums and galleries. Waiting for my 2 girls to get older so I can go more often.

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 05/05/2026 15:10

I lived there for 28 years until I got divorced and found life a bit too expensive on my own. My daughter loves London, it’s her home and she has remained there, going to university there. Her dad still lives there too. I work in London because that’s where the money is, and I visit my daughter often. Compared with where I live now, the choice of what to do is overwhelming. Next weekend I’m taking DD to Chinatown for dim sum and we’re going to see Hadestown at the Lyric in Shaftesbury Avenue after. I hate the last trains at weekends, always packed, so I’m staying at the Premier Inn in Euston and getting a huge fried breakfast the next day. I might pop down to the yellow bagel shop in Shoreditch for supplies and then to Queensway because there’s an Asian shop opposite that sells better value noodles and soy sauce, plus prawn crackers to die for. Then back on the tube to the station to go home. My new town has a lot of Eastern European supermarkets which are very good, but for other world cuisine London is unbeaten.

LondonTipton99 · 05/05/2026 15:24

Another fellow Angel(er) here. Love it. Love upper street and all the restaurant choices. Love walking by the canal. Love walking to shoreditch. Love walking down the road to St Pauls. Love the proximity of St Pancras International. Love the museums and galleries and shops.

davidturner84 · 05/05/2026 15:24

London has loads to offer!! Its packed full of culture, historical architecture and home to some of the literary greats - a city I'll never get tired of!

Norugratsatall · 05/05/2026 18:25

@SixtySomething. It was - totally mesmerising!
