AIBU and being a big baby? Tooth extraction -

So after a week of excruciating pain I had my tooth extracted on Friday morning. So day 3 now. I’ve barely slept in a week, round the clock pain killers. Today I’m in so much pain, face massive, bruising. I’ve had four kids but this has knocked me for six. I just want to cry I’m so fed up.

Is it normal to feel in this much pain? Can your share your dental stories so I don’t feel like such a big baby. I can’t work I’ve basically been in bed for a week on round the clock painkillers, and there’s been tears too. V unlike me.

Was this a standard simple extraction ! ie not a surgical removal or something big like a wisdom tooth.
It’s not normal and sounds like you may have a dry socket. You need to see the dentist who will put something in it for you and that will alleviate the pain.

SunMoonandChocolate · 03/05/2026 17:37

Wow! The last time I had an extraction it took 45 minutes, and the dentist told me that it was a very difficult tooth, it had come out in pieces, and I had little bits of tooth growing like whiteheads out of my gums for several weeks after, but I didn't have anything like the pain you're in OP. I'd find myself an emergency dentist if I were you, as in this state I don't think you should wait until Tuesday. Hope you soon get it sorted.

roseymoira · 03/05/2026 17:39

It sounds like dry socket, try and get into a dentist asap they can sort it out.

pambeesleyhalpert · 03/05/2026 17:40

im an oral surgeon dental nurse- day 3 is the worst!!! It should improve from now. If it’s still bad in a couple of days go back

toodisorganisedforschool · 03/05/2026 17:44

I had a horrible experience last year and wanted to rip my face off!! I went back to the dentist twice and they packed it with a clove dressing. IIRC it wasn’t full on dry socket (which I was so so worried about getting) but it was awful all the same. I think I was over the worst by day 4 or 5. Take as many pain killers as you’re allowed, and contact the dentist of it doesnt get any better soon. Good luck!

seanconneryseyebrow · 03/05/2026 18:17

So it was done by the oral surgeon - couldn’t be done by my normal nhs dentist so they got me in the next day with the private guy in their practice. This is because it was a curved root/tooth. Something like that. And she felt she couldn’t get it out. So he took 1/2 to get out the main part. And an HOUR to get out a tiny curved tip. It was horrific tbh. He nearly gave up and was gonna refer me to proper GA surgery but I just wanted it done. So maybe that is why it hurts so much?? I’m terrified of dry socket. How would I know? Face is massive and lots of bruising todY. I feel so unbelievably sorry for myself

Oh and bottom tooth at back - not a wisdom tooth

OP posts:
thetinsoldier · 03/05/2026 18:22

I think that sounds normal after the length of the surgery and the amount of pushing/pressing on your poor face.

i think it should starter to get better from day 4. I had a wisdom tooth out earlier this year and my face was so swollen and bruised. I couldn’t open my mouth for a week!

Is it your face that’s sore, or the gap? If the gap, read up about dry socket.

Was there injection there before you had it removed? Are you on antibiotics? Dentists should give those as a precaution after an extraction.

giddyaunt19 · 03/05/2026 18:25

I had my top wisdom tooth pulled and ended up with an oral antral fistula (think that’s what it’s called) where the dentist pulled the tooth and my sinus floor came away with it. Horrendous and took weeks and multiple trips to fix. Bloody awful

seanconneryseyebrow · 03/05/2026 18:25

No infection. I was given antibiotics yes. It’s not the gap per se it’s the entire area. Including other teeth nearby. I’m assuming that’s because they have been leaned on so much.

my god it was traumatising. I think I’d do sedation if I ever had to do that again. It went on forever

Sounds like dry socket which (having had it twice) is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced.

personally orajel (available OTC in supermarkets) and clove oil were the best things I could use at home before I could go back to the dentist and have it packed with Alvogyl.

Really feel for you and hope it improves soon!

Jeez that sounds horrific.

I recently had a wisdom tooth removed, it was sideways so surgery and the recovery was absolutely brutal. It really really varies depending on the complexity of the extraction and it sounds like yours was tough and this level of pain/swelling is normal in the worst cases. Definitely get sedated if you ever go through it again, at least I don't really remember it! Give the hospital a call if you're concerned and talk to a nurse who can see your notes and they will be able to advise you. Hope you feel better soon 💐

seanconneryseyebrow · 03/05/2026 18:34

I didn’t have it done at hospital. It was at my dentist (nhs) but they have a private arm and this guy did it for me who was more qualified than my dentist who said it would be beyond her

skiprun · 03/05/2026 18:35

You will know about it if you have dry socket. It was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced. I couldnt talk, couldn’t eat drink, anything, couldn’t even think straight. It was horrendous. The pain was ‘in’ the extraction zone though and pulsating

Jackiepumpkinhead · 03/05/2026 18:36

You poor thing, OP, definitely not being a baby. Tooth ache is such an unrelenting pain. I have no advice but I do hope you feel some relief soon.

seanconneryseyebrow · 03/05/2026 18:37

Oh. Well it’s not like that so that’s reassuring. That sounds more like what it was like prior to the extraction. I was crawling the walls with the throbbing and wanted to take pliers to it. I actually overdosed on pain meds - my partner was so cross and worried. I didn’t keep track and was a puking high as a kite crying mess. Not my finest hour! So he’s got me on a strict med schedule now so I can be tempted. I was reassured to read that no 1 cause of accidental overdose at an and e is dental pain. Doesn’t surprise me now.

The pulsating is horrendous isn’t it! I remember being woken up by the pain (surprised I even managed to sleep) and felt like someone had taken a jack hammer to my jaw.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 03/05/2026 18:40

If your face is burning it is likely you have an infection.

I had to have a massive molar extraction done a few weeks before my wedding a few years ago. It hurt like fuck for a couple of hours but after that was fine. What you are describing is not normal. You need to see an emergency dentist asap

FrLarryDuff · 03/05/2026 18:41

Oh, you poor thing. The procedure sounds horrendous and now the wretched aftermath.

I have had broken and unsalvageable molars removed but it was extremely straightforward.

Hope tomorrow is a better day.

Imaribenaberry · 03/05/2026 18:43

Having teeth extracted has a huge impact on your body, sounds like you had a terrible time and not being a baby at all! A few days in bed is quite normal and hopefully you’ll start to feel better tomorrow. Gentle salt water rinses but don’t swish it around the site or you’ll disturb how the socket is healing.

seanconneryseyebrow · 03/05/2026 18:43

Should I try and get an emergency dentist? Baring in mind today is Sunday and tomorrow is a bank holiday? I don’t want to waste my time and be out of bed (oh the thought) if this is just normal. Any dentists out there can advise??

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed a few years ago in dental hospital. They remove part of your jaw bone too. I was young and it was my birthday so asked for antibiotics to drink with. It was so painful I didn’t like cleaning the area and winded up back at my dentist who gave me proper antibiotics and told me off! I had lovely bruising too. The rest of my wisdom teeth have never bothered me!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/05/2026 18:45

I kept the tooth too!

seanconneryseyebrow · 03/05/2026 18:46

Haha. I didn’t but I saw it! Looked like a hooked dinosaur tooth. It was massive
