Where to find reasonably priced plus size grey school shorts for age 16-17

AprilFools2015 · 03/05/2026 14:54

Does anyone have any idea where I can plus size grey school shorts (summer uniform) in size age 16-17 for a reasonable price please? My son has just turned 11 and is in year 6, but is 5' 2" tall with size 6.5 feet so his grey school shorts from last year, plus size age 14-15 no longer fit & a lot of mens are way to expensive & often to casual for school.

(have bought the M & S ones for years which are perfect for him - plus size, adjustable waist - but they only seem to go up to age 14-15). Thank you for any ideas. He's AuDHD and overheats alot as can't regulate his body temp.

Alternative suggestion buy trousers and re-hem them at shorts length. Bonus point if you have trousers that still fit his waist but are too short!

Our local uniform direct shop has bigger sizes in stuff - might be worth a look on there. Also have a look on vinted - someone might be selling some x

Thank you for the responses and the links!! Very helpful 🙂Tried Vinted at first, but nothing suitable at the time, so may try again now. I may look at shortening and re-hemming the trousers too, as he has 4 or 5 pairs and cannot use them after mid July as Secondary school uniform is black.

hold on,

he is 11 and too big for age 16?

Does nothing else occur to you?

AprilFools2015 · 03/05/2026 18:47

Sadly our local uniform shop is very, very pricey and slightly captive audience as we live in a village area of a small town so I do have to buy a lot of things online and pay delivery fees, which defo doesn't help in a Cost of Living crisis!! (Might be best to try feeding him less 😂defo has "hollow legs" syndrome; think he gets it from his Dad (6' 2" and built like a rugby player) and Uncle (6' 4") - I'm 5' 4".

Not too big for age 16, too big for age 14-15 and thank you for fat-shaming an 11 year old autistic with ADHD; there is such a thing as genetic bone structure and muscle weight you know.

Does being polite to other people ever occur to you?

There are other children in his class a similar size, height and weight (including, yes, some girls), so it is perfectly possible for him to be the size he is...have you noticed that many companies charge an awful lot extra for larger size / higher age bracket kids clothes these days? Might it also be possible that clothes for 11 year old kids are no longer designed with 11 year old kids in mind so that the companies can charge more by ensuring customers have to buy larger sizes?? He is maybe the third tallest in his class.

That was unnecessary and unkind. My DS was in age 14/15 yr clothes at 12 because he was 5ft 4, nothing to do with weight.

In the kindest way. You do need to look at why an 11 year old needs age 16 clothes @AprilFools2015. My dd is very likely autistic and has afrid, she lives on chicken nuggets and pizza pretty much so I absolutely get the complications, but muscle weight and bine structure are just excuses. And I say that as a 5ft 3 woman who is a size 22.

Puffalicious · 03/05/2026 19:00

My son is 14 & 5 foot 9 & in 15-16. He is slim, but has sporty, chunky thighs. He's also Audhd & very particular about uniform. I've always used M&S, but due to unavailability of bigger sizes I tried Next this year & been really pleased. They have pull on trousers that don't look pull on & long length shirts. Perhaps they might have shorts?

awfulapril · 03/05/2026 19:01

I am not body shaming someone who is not on the thread

How much does he weigh? this sounds bonkers

awfulapril · 03/05/2026 19:02

also- ' big boned'? Is he very broad and muscly?

TheLurpackYears · 03/05/2026 19:04

Solidarity OP, I also struggled to find uniform that fitted my ND daughter in yr6. She was 5’4” and needed 16-18 uniform sizes. Add sensory issues into the mix and it’s HARD work. And nobody mention leavers hoodies!

they really aren't - he once knocked over his paternal grandma going to give her a hug, he was about 8 years old then and she isn't a slight or short woman. My husband is 6' 2" tall and wears 4XXL shirts, his brother is 6'4" there is such a thing as difference in bone structure and muscle weight, believe me (I was a size 8-10 for many years and fit into an age 7 school skirt when I was around 28 years old, it was a costume for a party)

Thank you so much!!! His Leavers hoodie is a Medium men's and he's nearly my height (5' 4") 💛

Yes, nail on the head, could probably pass as a line backer / pro-rugby player now; he's actually more of a musical type though, loves rock, metal and punk and plays the drums.

It's possible to be tall AND overweight, it's not unreasonable for someone to point out that if plus size 14-15 is too small then there is potentially a weight issue at play.

hahabahbag · 03/05/2026 19:23

Op, gently because as the parent of an nd child I know it’s hard, at 5’4 he still should fit in age 13/14 approx as that’s a normal height for that age. School uniforms today are very generously proportioned to start with, i struggled to find skirts long enough to satisfy uniform requirements because my dc were slim.

Mrscharlieeeee · 03/05/2026 19:26

My 11 year old (year 7, a June baby) is 5ft 8 and in a size 9 shoe! He wears Asda in a 15-16 but I have struggled with shorts. He’s an average build I would say, slim with thicker legs. He is literally the size of an older teenager so that’s the size clothes he wears. Our local uniform shop does them but they’re £30 a pair so I only bought 1.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 03/05/2026 19:27

5'2" isn't tall for an 11 year old is it?

I thought this. My son was taller than me at age 11 and I'm 5ft 4.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 03/05/2026 19:47

I not trying to be rude @AprilFools2015, but I think you are being a bit blinkered to part of the issue here.

5ft 2 is not especially tall at age 11 for a boy. 6ft 2 and needing 4xl is also not indicative of a healthy weight.

I appreciate we are only getting a snapshot, and I am by no means intending to fat shame, but I think you need to look at this from an independent perspective and be a bit more honest with yourself.

As I have said asda does a plus size school uniform range but that will only go up to a certain age and then you are going to have a bigger issue on your hands, especially with so many high schools insisting on bespoke uniform that can only be purchased through their licensed outlets.
