AIBU to think some drivers take bizarre risks on the road?

Today whilst driving within a mile of my own house I saw the following:

A woman with a dog on her lap whilst she drove the car - biggish dog like a labradoodle. - she could barely reach the steering wheel.
A man in full beekeeping kit with his hat on - how on earth he could see anything through that with all the netting everywhere amazes me.

People are just weird.

There is an awful lot of very poor driving around. If I had my way I'd make the points system much more punitive and increase the numbers of traffic police.

Too many people are very complacent about driving, and forget about what a dangerous activity it can be and what a responsibility driving correctly is.

Crazy! I once saw a man driving along the M25 with a
cat perched on his shoulder.

Yes, like overtaking on a bend just to get to a red light?!
The beekeeping suit made me laugh so much. Maybe he was transporting his bees somewhere and was allergic to stings?

When I commuted by bike I used to see this stuff everyday. Phones/tablets/laptops being used, women with bags on their laps as they drove eg large tote bags and dogs on their laps. If you were in a collision and the airbag triggered what do you think happens to the dog and you? Plus all the usual driving madness of jinking between lanes, speeding to red lights etc. As long I wasn't involved I let them all take their chances.

Yes, the other day I was walking down the road and someone had stopped to let someone out of a petrol station. There was a car coming the other way but they were a little way off so all they needed to do was ease off the gas but instead of that, they sped up and beeped. Middle aged man in a SUV. No doubt retired and not in a rush at all but couldn't slow down for 2-3 seconds.

And then there's the overtaking cyclists on blind bends or when someone is coming towards them.

Agree with the pp that we need more traffic police (and concentrating on the right things - while middle lane sitting is annoying it's a very long way from being the worst sort of behaviour on the roads yet the police seem to talk of little else on my Facebook!)

It's the risky overtakes just to get to the traffic lights 30 seconds faster that baffle me.

PauliesWalnuts · 03/05/2026 15:41

Red light jumping near me has reached epic proportions, to the point that when my “turn” came yesterday the green light was only able to let me and two other cars go.

The guy who went into us at rush hour in the outside lane of the M1 was on his phone texting and didn't see the stream of cars ahead suddenly breaking. The crash wasn't too bad but it turned out both him and his elderly mum next to him had some sort of a bone condition which meant they were at higher risk of being hurt and had to be airlifted to hospital. I've always wondered what was so important that he'd have taken the risk.

I nearly got taken out by a learner driver this morning! Drove across two lanes on a roundabout without indicating to make a quick exit to the McDonalds. Had to emergency stop and nearly got rear ended as a result.

I wasn’t conservative with my beeping - better he learns sooner rather than later that driving like a twat ends in tears.

I drive quite a lot with my work, and see some bonkers driving.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about it. Just, if you see it, give them a wide berth.

Fortunately, I've got quite a good sense for "that car is about to do something stupid", and then hang back a bit.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/05/2026 16:20

I’ll take the bonkers people over people overtaking on the wrong side of the road. The French do this too, on bends. Nutters.

Not a motorist but a cyclist I saw the other day coming back at night. No lights on back, no reflective clothes, dark clothes. Small light on front you could barely see. And bike was weaving a bit so maybe he was tipsy? I could hardly make him out though in the dark (with street lights on).

Almost every day I see drivers overtaking on bends, brows of hills, over solid white lines. I also see them going through red lights, just hurtling out of side turnings even if no one is stopping to let them out. Also hardly any of them stick to the speed limit. I live on a road which has a 30 mile limit and drivers go way faster than that along it (one of the reasons we won't get another cat).

A farm along the road is on a bend. It's not a particularly sharp bend and is, obviously, marked but in the 6 years I have lived here at least 7 cars have gone into the ditch opposite the farm and another 3 cars have gone through their hedge thankfully stopping just before they hit the house!
