Was it my fault?

On Friday, I booked a non-surgical procedure for yesterday. I have been a customer for several years, but only go once or twice a year max, using money I have saved from Christmas and birthday gifts as I cannot afford it otherwise.

When I was waiting for my treatment, I asked them to check when I’d been for that treatment last and was told it had been nine months previous. When my treatment was finished and I went to pay, I almost fainted when they told me the price had increased by £200. I was so upset and said I would not have booked had I known that as I could not afford it and that no one had told me either when I booked or arrived. The receptionist said she would call the manager and get back to me later. On my way home, she called to say it was a price increase and I had to pay it unfortunately. She said she was shocked herself as had not long returned from maternity leave. I have asked them to get the manager to call me on Tuesday.

AIBU to think they could have told me?

I also think the company will demand payment, how many people could book treatments then say shit really, thought it was same as last time, canr afford ir think you could stand me to it?

were you having Botox and fillers op?

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 03/05/2026 16:30

They should have told you in the booking confirmation email if they sent one.

It's really negligent for them not to give you a price.

I don't go for expensive procedures but I wouldn't have thought customers would have them done very often, therefore they should either inform all their recent customers in a mail shot or make sure it's included when you book.

Yes you could have asked but I don't think it's up to the customer to check, they should tell you. It's bad business practice not to.

I'm shocked by everyone saying it's the OPs fault! Such a big price increase they should have definitely communicated this!

It will be on their website. That’s how it works. No one sends emails to everyone or makes calls saying did you check the price. No one. From your hairdresser on.

Huckleberries · 03/05/2026 16:49

I agree they should say the price at booking

But if they don't, wouldn't you ask? I ask the hairdresser every time.

That's untrue, my hairdresser, my nail tech and my beautician this year sent emails out about a price increase.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 03/05/2026 16:50

Did you not think to ask? Surely that’s a normal thing to do when you haven’t used the service for a while, especially with things going up in price as they are at the moment

But the OP says it wasn't on their website. If it was, then yes the salon would not be in the wrong

Review them honestly and stop other people making the same mistake.

No prices displayed and no mention of price increases. Only record of price increases refers to their 2025 increase and nothing since . That was posted on Instagram

Under section 51 of the consumer rights act 2015, it’s really about whether the new price is reasonable? Ideally you should have checked the price when you booked but also I can understand why you expected that, as a repeat customer, you’d have been advised of a significant rise when you booked if it’s the exact same procedure.
I think the best thing to do is to check around at the cost with other places and if the new price is unreasonably more expensive then you would have a case to pay a discounted price. If the new price is about the same as everywhere else then I’m afraid you might be stuck.

intrepidpanda · 03/05/2026 17:28

Did you not notice the price rises in the last 9 months.
Why on earth would you assume the treatment is the same price as 2025.

Truetoself · 03/05/2026 17:39

strange that there were no prices available for anyone to see. Then how can they say what the price is? They have to demonstrate that’s the price don’t they?

I'm shocked that people don't check prices before having stuff done. It it's a procedure that the OP previously paid £500 for, then that's the sort of money where you check before you commit. It's not a pint of milk.

Lesson learned. Don’t book something without checking the price first.

Then you might have a case. I'd contact CAB. I am pretty sure it is legal requirement to have prices displayed.

BeanMeUp · 03/05/2026 18:10

I generally live under a rock (and look like it too most of the time) but wondering what beauty/cosmetic treatment costs £700?

The shop doesn’t have to sell the goods or service at the price though (look up ‘invitation to treat’ in contract law).

Something that had cost £500 a few months ago was bound to have increased.

I genuinely can’t believe people wouldn’t check, especially when the original price was that much. And if you only go once a year, they aren’t going to see you as a ‘regular’ as such.

You may be able to get a legal solution but you won’t be able to go back there so I hope there are a lot of providers in your area.

Why? You wouldn't expect that in any other business, for the company to work out when you last visited and exactly how much everything you might want to buy has gone up by since then?

It's the buyer's responsibility to check the price themself before deciding whether they want to buy it or not.

Viviennemary · 04/05/2026 22:38

I would be annoyed too but I don't think you have any choice but to pay it. Unless the manager gives you a discount as a gesture of goodwill.
