If you’re voting on Thursday…

… in the local elections, are you looking at local councillors and deciding which one would be best fit for your area, or are you looking at MPs and central govt to decide who gets your vote?

IABU - using central govt and MPs to decide who to vote for (effectively a protest vote)

YANBU - using local councillors and local issues to decide who to vote for

[No local elections in my area but if there were I would look at local councillors and issues to decide)

@JustGiveMeReason but in many ways it is going to reflect what people think of the National government.

JustGiveMeReason · 03/05/2026 23:46

Only because, over the years, the National News outlets have told the public, this is what it does.

It should be nothing to do with National politics.
Many times over the decades I've voted for different parties at National and local levels (and MEPs and Regional Mayors and Local Crime Commissioners).

I look at the people standing in each election and listen to what they say, and vote accordingly.

We have had nothing from any of the candidates, apart from a flyer from Reform. Information is very sketchy, so my vote will go to the party that has the best chance of keeping out Reform, whether it’s a party I could subscribe to, or not.

This ⬆️

SlumChum · 03/05/2026 23:59

It's a bit of both for me. I know I am not voting for a Conservative or Reform, as I know members of those parties would not represent me. But from the others, including independents, I would look at their local work and see who had done the most for the community.

EmeraldRoulette · 04/05/2026 00:38

@JustGiveMeReason " should be nothing to do with National politics."

but in some areas, it's very reflective and representative. I'm likely to vote for an independent candidate in many situations. But not all situations.

Nat6999 · 04/05/2026 00:55

I've already done my postal vote, the choice was easy for me as ds is the Green Party candidate. I've spent the last month bundling leaflets, stuffing envelopes & helping organise everything ready for door knocking & leaflets rounds.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/05/2026 16:20

It's hard to choose here as all parties appear to be running a 'slag off the other parties' campaign, rather than telling us what they'll be doing if they win!

Same here. But also it's between Lib Dem & Conservatives here. All the others together get less than 20% if the votes)

I haven't yet decided which ( locally ) are the least worst.

KatRee · 04/05/2026 01:02

We have a really great independent councillor here and I will be voting for him. It’s so refreshing to have someone actual address real issues and not be drawn into the bickering of party politics

Nat6999 · 04/05/2026 01:06

LakieLady · 03/05/2026 17:45

I've had a few leaflets from the Greens and one from Reform. The Reform one was a generic one, the only local thing in it was the name of their candidate.

I sent the Reform leaflet back to Reform HQ, using their Freepost address.

It costs them £2.50 every time a leaflet is returned, get enough sent back & maybe we could bankrupt them. Money is the only thing that matters to them. They haven't door knocked round my area, they aren't even deliver their trashy leaflets during daylight, I got up to one through the door overnight the other day. Ds is the Green Party candidate & he & his supporters have worked so hard for months as the ward has been selected as a target ward to win which has meant they have had a budget for a lot more leaflet runs & action days where they have flooded the area speaking to residents about local issues & delivering leaflets & newsletters.

worriedmumofgirls · 04/05/2026 07:37

@Nat6999I’m no reform voter but that is pathetic. Just because you don’t agree with them, doesn’t mean that millions don’t.

RampantIvy · 04/05/2026 07:45

Our local incumbents are doing a good job, and I am voting to retain them. One of them knocked at our house last week and I told him that I would vote for him. Our local MP also spends a lot of time engaging with the constituents and does what she can to address issues. She is trying to get a very much needed bill passed.

It is very much a two horse race here and people will either vote for Reform or against Reform. I will vote against them.

GloiredeDijon · 04/05/2026 07:57

I can’t use your poll because on this occasion I am weighing up both local and national issues.

Yes, @luckylavender - if you've read the thread you'll see I've already apologised for that

Ah, but then again if you’d read the OP you wouldn’t have invited those comments with your annoying post 🤣

Greyblankie · 04/05/2026 08:23

I’ll be voting for the Reform candidate - simply because it’s Reform. I’d vote Restore but they don’t have candidates in my area.

Attictroll · 04/05/2026 08:44

Tbh we’re basically trying to work out how to keep Reform out best. Dh is even talking about voting conservative to do it which I find horrifying and could never do. And tbh would really affect my opinion of my lovely caring dh and can’t believe believe society is making him even consider such a thing. All parties seem to be campaigning on keeping reform out except reform.

Attictroll · 04/05/2026 08:47

I was returning reform leaflets too ds every time he sees one is editing it to say “racist” not reform so I’ve stopped tbh. Farage is ghastly and has been since a racist school boy. He is a posh dick who doesn’t give a dam about real people I can’t believe people are being taken in.

BejamBabe · 04/05/2026 08:54

I've voted tactically, for the Tories, much to my shame and horror. Better that than the alternatives in my area.

I'm sorry if it annoyed you Hmm
I did read the OP but misinterpreted it. Which I then apologised for.
Is that OK now?

Is your DS a firm believer in the boob whispering theory? Mind over mammary?

Ive had no greens knocking on my door but i look forward to it happening 😂

Oh lighten up. I just thought it was funny you thinking that someone else should read the thread with more care 😁

That said though, I don’t know how you could misinterpret “no local elections in my area” ..but you never know, perhaps @luckylavender misinterpreted your post too 😏

I think this reaction to your DH voting Conservative (potentially) is utterly bonkers! They aren't the devil incarnate!

dottiehens · 04/05/2026 13:29

My area is a safe one so not mending what is not broken. Local issues it is.

Vnml · 04/05/2026 13:35

My area is not having elections. That’s next year.

There are some very ignorant people in the UK that don’t understand what national and local politics do.

How many will vote for Reform due to stop the boats? Immigration is a thing on the NATIONAL government’s agenda. NOT a local council.

If people don’t know what each govt area does, don’t bother voting

CoffeeCantata · 04/05/2026 13:58

In my area it's a toss up between Conservatives and Lib Dems, so I always read very carefully what they're promising to do and what their priorities are and vote accordingly. It's usually a 'No overall control' result, anyway.

If I thought Reform would get in I'd vote tactically, if I could, to stop them. But I genuinely think Reform don't stand a chance around here...it's solid Lib Dem and a bit of Tory.

I think it’s ignorant to think that local election results don’t impact central government
