Disabled parking police

Why are people always giving people shit for parking in the disabled bays and interrogating them on whether or not they're truly disabled? Non-driving cyclist here so I have no skin in this game but I always think it's so crazy to give a shit about whether or not someone using a parking space is actually disabled or not.

I will remember this post next time some cyclist gets stroppy because I'm driving in the cycle lane.

I have a blue badge
It is for when I support someone who is disabled.
I could just use disabled spaces to make my life easier when I'm on my own (shouldn't but could).

Some people are not as conscientious about that, same as some seem to think family n parking still applies when your kid is a teenager.

If people sometimes call out CF behaviour then seems not unlike people calling others put for tossing rubbish out the car window.

If no-one enforces rules then the losers are the ones who were meant to be helped by those rules

Once some guy was parked in the cycle lane so I milkshaked his windshield lol. Why would you drive in a bike lane tho there's so much room

A blue badge is issued to the person who needs it. Not their BFF.

They don't give out badges for someone who supports someone disabled. They only give them to people who are actually disabled.

AfternoonVanessa · 02/05/2026 10:53

I cannot exit a car without opening the door fully. If there are no cross hatch markings adjacent to the spaces there will not be enough room to do that.
To park in a disabled space without a badge or to be using someone else's badge is selfish. And of course illegal. £1000 fine.
I don't get asked as I use walking aids but it does piss me off.

Purplewarrior · 02/05/2026 11:00

YABVU

Parking in a disabled bay when you don’t have a blue badge is utterly selfish. Disabled people face so many hurdles and being able to park within walking distance of a shop/cafe/bank makes a huge difference to them.

So would you rather we milkshake someone's windshield when they park in a disabled space? I don't understand the reasoning

Check gov.uk

A carer can apply for a Blue Badge on behalf of the person they care for if that person has a severe mobility issue or hidden disability, allowing the carer to park closer to destinations. The badge is issued to the disabled person, not the carer, meaning it can be used in any car they are traveling in.

Mine is the only car that carries them so it sits permanently in my car, ergo, I have a badge.

Which was my point. It's not for me to use it when they're not with me. But others I know are less fastidious about sticking to the rules.

I could be a knob and use it when I shouldn't and then shout "not all disabilities are visible" to anyone that challenges me. Fortunately I'm not a knob. But I'd like to think someone would challenge me if they saw me leap out of the car energetically.

That's not quite true. My sister and her husband have a badge for their severely disabled son. So technically it's his badge but he can't drive do it's issued to them effectively .

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 02/05/2026 12:13

To address your other point, the reason they challenge is because as a disabled person its annoying when someone twat without a badge parks in the space meaning i can't use it, and i need the space.

However, it's currently all over the news that Self-Appointed Parking Police are becoming more common, and more aggressive, and it's only because of the current bent of media to paint us all as fakers

The badge is their sons though not theirs .

ds has a blue badge it is in his name and his badge.

but people are getting hung up on the wrong bit. If you don’t have a disabled badge don’t park in a disabled space

ArtyFartyCrafts · 02/05/2026 12:22

I think people that park in spaces that aren’t designed for them, i.e. to assist with permanent or temporary disability and/or provide more space to manoeuvre child seats/prams etc are lazy and incredibly selfish.

I think a huge proportion of cyclists are selfish, entitled arses who think the law doesn’t apply to them.

I think people that challenge those that do not have a blue badge displayed or those that do not have young children with them are perfectly reasonable. If they challenge someone who does have a blue badge displayed then they are massive dickheads.

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/05/2026 12:35

There are a couple of disabled spaces in my work car park, most of the time they're taken up by people not displaying a blue badge. I don't challenge them but I am pleased on the infrequent occasions that the traffic wardens decide to turn up and ticket them. I don't understand why they don't come more often, they would make loads of revenue in parking fines if they came a couple of times a week.

Our local council gives out card things for carers to park on double yellows and in disabled spaces when caring - maybe the poster is talking about them. In my office everyone calls them blue badges

There are not many disabled parking spaces, and when someone who is not disabled parks in one, it can mean that a disabled person has to give up on whatever their plan was, because they can’t park and get their wheelchair out, or walk the distance to wherever they are going, @essentialwaitrosesmokedham.

That is why misuse of disabled parking spaces matters to disabled people.

No it's not. It is issued to the son. It can be used in any vehicle he is in but not in a car when he isn't present.
