To not bother with Lidl anymore.

They had the best loyalty scheme and I was actually converted but they have now screwed it up.
Tescos is better quality and will be better value again.

Such a shame

The incentive to do a big £200 shop with £20 off was worth the stress of their tills. But without that incentive I will stick to buying what is cheap in there in a small weekly shop. The rest that's price matched I'd rather forfit the stress of the packing.

I really hate the experience of Lidl. It's stressful. The till beeping away while you put your pin in. I always feel I'm getting death stares if the till asks for my pin. In Tesco nd sains I don't give a crap about time as its self serve with plenty of tills.

That 10% made a big difference to tolerance of of the stress of shopping there. Shame. I will ne spending much less and was top 10% of spenders in our local last year

Holdonforsummer · 05/05/2026 22:00

Big Lidl shopper here. I used to love the 10% off deal. I’d easily hit this every month and would buy all my toilet rolls/cleaning products etc, netting myself about £15 off plus the other freebies along the way (fruit/chocolate bar/bakery item). Now I’ll be lucky to get £5 off a month. I am disappointed @lidl. 😩

usedtobeaylis · 05/05/2026 22:02

Really disappointing. But they're all shit now. I was in Lidl at the weekend and I hate the Tesco-esque charging £6 for something but half of that if you've got a card.

Bluegreenbird · 05/05/2026 22:03

Oh no. I live five minutes from mine and am in there several times a week. Will
miss the random freebies. Shame. Will sill shop there though. I love Lidl.

SkibidiSigma · 05/05/2026 22:11

Adding my unhappiness to the thread! I love lidl and have 2 within walking distance, but the reward scheme was what really made it stand out. The random freebies were great and I always took advantage of the 10% off. I have recommended the app to so many people in the past too. Will now just go in for certain things and go back to sainsburys home delivery

Yep, the two tier pricing.
I tolerate it n Tesco as I have a clubcard card. But I don't want an app on my phone to get cheaper things.
This whole thing about everything being done on your phone now can fuck off. Don't get me started on parking apps.

IloveJonBonJovi · 05/05/2026 22:16

Ah this is shit. It’s our nearest big shop and we do most of our shopping there. Loved the Lidl plus app. The free items were brilliant

mumsandaunties · 05/05/2026 22:26

It’s so disappointing. The gamified discounts were something my kids loved (spinning the wheel) and like a PP, we’d aim to hit £250 in the last couple of days of the month, so we could start each new month with a big shop at 10% off. I reckon I probably made about £30 a month worth of savings, and I’d always try to go to Lidl rather than any other shop. Now I’d say all the incentives are gone, and as I actually prefer Aldi’s range, I think my Lidl days are over.

It’ll be interesting to see what the sales figures say about the new scheme. I think they’ll lose people like me…but I’m not convinced they’ll gain any new customers with the simplified scheme…the benefits aren’t big enough to make it worthwhile.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 05/05/2026 22:58

I don't know, I think it may actually suit me better than the old system. You had to spend £250 and then use the 10% off within 7 days so I didn't make a great saving with the 10% because I didn't need much!

That was probably brilliant for people spending a lot but I struggled to spend £250. Now the points last two years there's less pressure to reach the target, when I get enough points I can convert to a voucher and get either £3 or £5 off whatever I'm spending.

It's more like a punishment for not having an app than an actual loyalty scheme.

Stressybetty · 05/05/2026 23:23

Yes we were maximising the 10% free items etc. We do need to cut our food bill however so the new system will take the pressure off spending £250 a month and getting a month's shop through the till. Disappointing they've gone down this road though.

ilovesleep6 · 06/05/2026 09:00

I’m betting they will no longer do the free bakery/ fruit promotions anymore either.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 06/05/2026 09:20

I'm disappointed in the change too. I'm low income and relied on the 10% off, and, like others utilised it to save as much money off a big shop, including my dogs' food for the month.

I used to get the 7.5kg bag of potatoes with the free veg voucher so that will be missed too.

Fuck sake.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 06/05/2026 10:07

Maybe they've ditched the old system precisely because the 10% cost them a fortune, I can't remember was there a limit on how much you could spend on the 10% shop?

I think overall it's a good move, I certainly used to spend on unnecessary stuff just to bump it up to £250 and there must have been loads of older people (and around my area students) who could never benefit from it.

MyCottageGarden · 06/05/2026 10:10

Giraffeandthedog · 02/05/2026 11:32

Noooo! The main reason I shop at Lidl is the random freebies. It’s even a family joke. I know it sounds silly, but it really makes me smile when I get my free donut, or fruit, or random one-brand product.

I can happily afford to shop at the other supermarkets, but this was a differentiator for me.

You base which supermarket you do your entire shop at, on a free banana?!

Holdonforsummer · 06/05/2026 11:37

Yes, there was a limit to the amount you could save on 10% - a cashier told me it was £15. I definitely saved about £20 across the month with their promotions and freebies. That’s half my monthly pay rise gone then - the other half gone on our water bill which has weirdly leapt up. Fun times.

No. Like I said - it was a differentiator, not the defining factor.

Peachsandcream · 06/05/2026 11:55

V annoying, I liked the old system

ConnieHeart · 06/05/2026 11:58

Sartre · 02/05/2026 07:59

Tesco have the best system imo, I don’t think any supermarket has ever matched them. Lidl’s is weird in that you have to manually check for vouchers and add them to your card before shopping- how many would think to do this? I appreciate Tesco’s because I save them up all year for money off my Xmas shop.

Sainsbury's is like this. You have to activate the offers on the app & then for some of them use the Smart Scan

Not a very attentive cashier then - it was £20.

You can see who used the scheme to full effect on this thread. At one point we were getting an extra £35 in groceries a month. A penny in every pound now? Not really a good deal .

We were doing the vast majority of our shopping there. There’s zero incentive to do that anymore.

And even offering all those discounts, its profits rose by almost 8% last year.

Netcurtainnelly · 06/05/2026 16:21

Marks changed their app too. Not that I use Marks alot.

Funnywonder · 08/05/2026 17:55

The new system seems to be what we’ve had in NI for some time. I had no idea that it was different everywhere else. Maybe we were the guinea pigs🤣

VeterinaryCareAssistant · Yesterday 19:50

I've had a voucher for a free bakery item and a free bag of nuts with the new app.

JMSA · Yesterday 20:02

I think it’s pretty bad anyway. I’ve been healthy eating this past year, and no longer use their bakery (unlike before Blush). I do however spend a small fortune on yogurt from there.
It’s not tailored to the customer at all.
Plus, it often takes ages for my Lidl card to load on the app (for scanning) and half the tills are permanently out of order.
I prefer Tesco’s way of doing things.
