AIBU for taking a parking space when another driver claimed it?

Something happened this evening when I took the kids out.
I was driving into a car park and there wasn’t much space. As I turned in, a small car in front of me was reversing out of a bay, so I stopped and waited.

There was a Range Rover Velar off to the side, but it wasn’t clear whether he was waiting for that same space or just passing through. He didn’t have his indicator on at first, and he wasn’t positioned directly behind the reversing car like I was.

As soon as the small car finished reversing out, I drove straight into the bay because I had been waiting directly behind it. After I parked, the Range Rover driver got out and came to my window saying he had been waiting for that space. I told him I genuinely didn’t know he was waiting because he was at the front/side of the reversing car, not behind it like I was.

He asked me to move my car, but I said no because I had already parked. He then left and went to park somewhere else.

It was only when he walked up to my car that I realised he’s a popular Instagram comedian. After he left, my son mentioned he was wearing those Ray Ban Meta Smart glasses that can record. I don’t know if he was recording or not, but that’s what happened.

Am I in the wrong?

Yes I expect you were in the wrong

Twasasurprise · 01/05/2026 21:46

You saw him waiting to the side. You seem to acknowledge that his car was there waiting first, just not in the optimal position that you were later able to take up.

What do you think he was doing if not waiting for the space?

Tollington · 01/05/2026 21:48

First come, first serve

You weren’t first

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 01/05/2026 21:48

YABU he was probably planning to reverse in or giving the other driver space to reverse out. You should have waited to see if he reversed into the space. Why else would a car be randomly sat there?

Marieme · 01/05/2026 21:51

Doesn’t count unless his indicator was on so I’m with you OP

LoremIpsumCici · 01/05/2026 21:52

Yabu. A stationary car isn’t just passing through. That would be a car where the wheels are going round and round.

HippopotumArse · 01/05/2026 21:53

I wouldn’t worry about it OP. Given he was driving an enormous Rangerover, he’d have probably struggled to squeeze it into the space left by the little car anyway.

Crunched · 01/05/2026 21:58

What's his name on Instagram? We can enjoy you going viral.

Tink3rbell30 · 01/05/2026 22:03

Yes you'll probably end up posted online now.

Malinia · 01/05/2026 22:22

Yabu. He was clearly waiting for the space. You were very rude.

MyBraveFace · 01/05/2026 22:24

Don't worry, the opinion of anyone who follows people on Instagram isn't worth much.

busyd4y · 01/05/2026 22:25

Maybe it's a typo but you know that's not a tennis saying? First come, first served 😁

Hard to say if you were wrong OP but like everyone else I want to know who it is, are there comedians who only tell their jokes on Instagram?

busyd4y · 01/05/2026 22:27

MyBraveFace · 01/05/2026 22:24

Don't worry, the opinion of anyone who follows people on Instagram isn't worth much.

What does that mean? Why would being an Instagram user make your opinions not worth much?

wishfulthinking25 · 01/05/2026 22:39

Yep, you’re in the wrong and you know it. Probably end up on social media

FettchYeSandbagges · 01/05/2026 22:46

Range Rover Velar, Instagrammer, Meta smart glasses, just sitting there idling and not indicating, then getting out of his car to come over to you and expect you to get out of his way? People might debate about whether you were in the wrong (you weren't), but one thing is for certain. He's a complete dick.

Veraverrto · 01/05/2026 22:50

Nah, that's what indicators are for. I'm with you OP.

FuckKnowsMatee · 01/05/2026 23:04

I had pretty much the exact same thing happen to me last week. A car was reversing out of a space directly ahead of me, but there was also a car ‘waiting’ which I assumed was allowing the car to continue pulling out as there was no indicator to suggest he was actually waiting for the space. I drove straight in and as I got out my car, the driver of the car shouted he was waiting for the space and called me a stupid bitch 😂 I genuinely thought he was on his way out of the car park and just letting the car in the space pull out. No indicator and I’m not a feckin mind reader.

Mcdhotchoc · 01/05/2026 23:25

Waiting or creating content?

JustGiveMeReason · 01/05/2026 23:51

YWBU.
Etiquette, manners, call it what you want, but obviously a car waiting in a full car park as someone reverses out of a spaces is waiting for the space.
If for any reason they weren't, then they would have just followed the car out of the car park.
You know you were rude and wrong.

Nearly50omg · 01/05/2026 23:59

In your situation I’d have got eye contact with the “waiting” other car and pointed to the space and asked if he’s waiting for it! You clearly knew he was and didn’t give a shit.
rude

Yes. I agree. A busy car park, a bit of stress, my brain wouldn't have registered that he was waiting without the indicators.

Justwonderingifthisisnormal · Yesterday 04:02

YANBU, If you don't use your indicator, you have no right to even turn (obviously, not serious), never mind expecting someone else to read your mind. I wish cars wouldn't turn unless people used their indicators! Fair play to you. The cheek of him to even get out of his car and approach you. I bet he felt amazing afterwards. Don't second guess standing your ground.

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 04:06

Yes, you were in the wrong. You saw the car and knew they could be waiting, but still parked anyway.

JellyBelly1001 · Yesterday 06:04

Ive never seen anyone use their indicators in a car park!

ThejoyofNC · Yesterday 06:09

Why the need to mention that it was a range rover? Are you trying to say they're automatically in the wrong because they have an expensive car?
