Selfish to play loud music in garden regularly?

Why do some people think it's ok to blast out their tunes in their garden, especially the same repetitive beat, no lyrics. It's just one neighbour, no one else.

It could be during the day, on an evening, but regular and several times a week, every day when work was being done an extension last summer.

Over the years we've had parties with music, which was loud at times, but it was a weekend night occasionally and we would inform neighbours, most of whom came anyway. Generally if in garden it's nice to listen to the birds or have quiet background sounds, so as to not intrude on anyone else.

If they love those tunes so much why don't they wear ear pods rather than subjecting the rest of the neighbourhood or hey, go out, get a life and dance the night away!

Currently sitting in garden, DC playing, all we can hear is their dance music, which personally I hate. Can't actually see but no sounds of a party with people, just someone who likes to play music outside.

Know it's not illegal but it's awful and can even hear it inside with windows closed. Why are some people so selfish and entitled?

Horrendous and selfish. Gift them some headphones as a hint !

My next door but one neighbours are from somewhere in Eastern Europe, there’s four men living in a HMO. No bother at all and in the milder weather they will sit out in their garden most of the weekend with their music playing. It’s hard to describe the style of music but we quite like it. They never play it into the evening. Honestly don’t mind it, we have a little dance doing the gardening. We’re 55 and 58.

People have become very selfish. Yappy dogs, unruly, loud children, blaring music, shouting, swearing, revving the bollocks off the car at all hours, bonfires constantly, banging doors, arguing, power tools all day, mowing early in the morning, sigh.

Cocktailglass · 02/05/2026 20:00

Yep! Since the opportunity of making our gardens into an extension of homes, some take it too far. Xx

Some people play music, some people have dogs, some people have screaming children. All part and parcel of living in close proximity to others.

I tried an O2 all-standing bar-in-the-auditorium venue a couple of years back. Never again!

Wrong thread, sorry!

I know the answer! Because they are selfish twats. You’re welcome 👍

Put some music on outside in your own garden just loud enough to drown out theirs. Some opera or something.

Wish44 · 03/05/2026 09:18

Totally agree op! It’s unfathomable to me that it never occurs to people that other people don’t want to listen to what they listen to.

i am researching noisy water fountains for my garden, and have had outside plug sockets put it to power them. I am hoping that the sound of the water will be what my ears tune into rather than the neighbours radio.

you could always try blasting classical music in the hope it causes them to realise!

Pippin2017 · 03/05/2026 09:21

Yup, totally selfish. So many people give no thought (or just don't care) to how their actions impact others.

JamJar187 · 03/05/2026 09:46

Not my immediate neighbours who do this, but usually ones a few doors down.

I "combat" this by getting the lawnmower out and using that - and its not quiet either!

Soon makes them shut off their bust up 90s chav choonz.

AImportantMermaid · 03/05/2026 09:54

Take an Alexa into the garden. Say ‘Alexa, play Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On 40 times’. Put your noise cancelling headphones on. You could ask them to turn it down.

NeatGreyBiscuit · 03/05/2026 10:03

It depends. I do believe it's generally inconsiderate and wouldn't do it. But if your neighbour isn't considerate with their own brand of noise, making your own noise is fine.

TheGardenPond · 03/05/2026 10:04

Incredibly selfish. I wish it was illegal and think it should be.

Give me music over constant running water, I’d constantly feel the need to go for a wee. A running water feature would be neck and neck with being as annoying as wind chimes.

I got so pissed off when the NDNs' sons were teenagers were home alone in the holidays, playing music really loud all day long, that I put the CD player on repeat and left "Tosca" playing for over 4 hours while I was out.

(Neighbours the other side are detached, so it won't have disturbed them.)
