AIBU to wish people wouldn’t play music in the park?

First of all I’m well aware there aren’t any laws against it, and secondly, no I haven’t approached anyone to ask them to stop.

But I go to the park to have a bit of peace and quiet and hopefully have some stress relief and stillness. I can’t read a book because I can’t concentrate on reading when there’s music on as I can’t do both at once. I just find it stressful.

Why do people always have to have some kind of sound or movement about them? Why can’t they just enjoy some peace and quiet like everyone else?

And no, I don’t have a garden 🙄

I hate this too OP. Some people seem to feel the need to start blaring music as soon as the sun comes out. Music is great but keep it to yourself and stop inflicting it on everyone!

Greenfaces · 01/05/2026 15:58

Agree. And also smoking weed. I don’t want to smell it thanks, very much

wonkhamstrong · 01/05/2026 15:59

Completely agree about the music (don't care about the weed). I am very picky about music and somebody else's rubbish choices blaring makes it impossible to switch off. It's so selfish!

JuliettaCaeser · 01/05/2026 15:59

Anyone but an utter selfish moron knows not to inflict themselves on others in a public space.

NoraLuka · 01/05/2026 16:00

Totally agree and the same goes for the beach. Also, runners and cyclists who listen to music without headphones. Hate unnecessary noise pollution!

Nofeckingway · 01/05/2026 16:00

I hate this too. Why inflict your personal choice on random people . And even if you were playing my favourite maybe I am not in the mood and want quiet . There should be a law about it . Very antisocial.

Yes but personally I prefer weed to tobacco. Personally I would prefer neither.

Absolutely 💯
There's this is new invention. Its called headphones. I wouldn't dream of inflicting my music on others. If you want peace I suggest your local Cemetery. Yes it's a Cemetery but its peaceful. Nobody minds you sitting quietly and reading and people (usually) behave themselves.

The only time I want to hear music at the park is when the band is playing in the band stand. But they play for a couple of hours a couple of days a week at set times and then go.

I wouldn't suggest approaching them. You have no idea how they might react.

Lottapianos · 01/05/2026 16:10

'There's this is new invention. Its called headphones'

Some people don't seem to be aware of them. Literally EVERYWHERE you go, there's at least one idiot blaring music / having a phonecall on speaker / watching something at top volume on their phone, as if they're in their own living room rather than a public space. I do not get it

HaveYouFedTheFish · 01/05/2026 16:12

Music in the park has been a phenomenon for many decades so isn't a new issue, but I do agree with you. I love to listen to the chatter of birds in my small but peaceful garden and don't mind the sound of children playing on one side at all, but the neighbours on the other side play music in the garden and talk really loudly to be heard over it, and smoke (the gardens are small so it comes over the fence) which really spoils reading in the garden.

Needmorelego · 01/05/2026 16:15

Usually I'd agree but the bloke in the park I was in today was playing the best 80s pop anthems 😂

Sounds great. If only we could at least pick the music.

Actually I do remember being on a bus once where some music was being played.
It was kind of annoying but again the music wasn't that bad.
One song started - something bland and cheesy like Westlife - but the person playing skipped it.
An older lady turned around and said something along the lines of "Hey don't skip it.....if we have to listen to your music I want to hear that song... I like it".
😂

leggingsbotoxmatcha · 01/05/2026 16:34

No ma’am, headphones were invented for this. You are more than welcome and entitled to listen to whatever you want whenever you want, wherever you want. But that doesn’t mean that I should have to. YANBU!

FlyingApple · 01/05/2026 17:11

I hate it so much. I am in nature, wanting some peace from the usual concrete world we live in and some selfish twat can't even let me enjoy a little respite.

DaisyMayBojangles · 01/05/2026 17:13

Slightly off topic but why do blokes in shit cars immediately decided to start blaring their overly bass-heavy, shit music with all the windows down? You can practically hear the speakers buzzing and clipping! Is it some kind of weird mating call? Do these men think women find this attractive in some way? Or is it just willy waving at each other..? 🤔

They are the current middle aged men who took their 14 year old Girlfriends to mc Donald’s car parks to hang out. Still
thinking they are young.

See also men who feel the need to really rev their engines by schools, trying to impress little
girl’s the weirdos.

Plummagic · 01/05/2026 17:19

Our park is not a peaceful place. Kids playing on the swings and play equipment. Football and cricket games.Dogs barking. A bit of music doesn't bother me in amongst the general noise.

Monty36 · 01/05/2026 17:27

Totally selfish. Ignorant too. Who wants to listen to what they want to hear ? Imposing your musical tastes on others is rubbish.

"Willy waving" 🤣🤣🤣

Yes maybe to them it says "check it out ladies. I don't play by anyone's rules. I'm a rebel."

To any woman with basic sense it says "ladies I'm a selfish prat who still expects his mum to do his washing. I think any woman who isn't interested is a lesbian."
He probably shouts that at the pub when they turn him down.

itsallsohard · 01/05/2026 17:59

It's everywhere. Parks, the GP waiting room, the bus, the train ... people conducting Zoom calls, playing videos or games, playing music -- excuse me, there are NO circumstances in which you should use your phone on speaker in any public place. But the rest of us are too scared to challenge the noise-makers.
