To want a bit of peace at the hairdresser?

I’m at a new salon where my hairdresser has moved to and there’s a staff member yabbering and yabberiing.

Another is eating crisps.

Just shhhhh

I want some peace……

It’s a public workplace and they are always noisy - even with hairdryers.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 01/05/2026 13:01

Be glad your hairdresser doesn’t sing in your ear, like mine. Badly.

Tink3rbell30 · 01/05/2026 18:02

They are noisy places unfortunately.

queenceleste · 01/05/2026 18:25

I agree! It’s just a shock. The chewing on crisps and the loud chat among staff.

I think necessary noise and quiet chat between stylist and client is fine. inter staff banter is just not classy nor is it customer sensitive or professional

This is intolerable, I could not ever go back to this person

have a mobile hairdresser then.

I can't imagine being so miserable that I was upset about colleagues having a chat whilst working. A hair salon is not a place you go to find peace.

exactly I love the hustle and bustle. Strange thread.

Well I have to say that I have never gone to a hairs stylist where the staff members are sitting around gabbing and eating in the actual salon while a customer is being taken care of.
Lots of times I've been asked when I go in if I'd like a coffee, but no stylist is drinking one, it really isn't professional?
So in that respect I get what you mean OP.
However I wouldn't let it bother me, I'd just think that's the first time I've ever seen that!
I hope, since it was your first visit to this salon, that your haircut/style turned out well for you anyway!

I hate smalltalk so I don't go to the hairdresser very often. DD cuts my hair now and again.

I have yet to find a hairdresser that shuts up and lets me sit there in peace. I don't mind other chat and hairdryers, once the chat is not directed at me.

Pippa12 · 02/05/2026 22:06

The hairdressers don’t eat or drink in the salon where I go, nor do they banter. It’s not particularly posh or upmarket either.

I do find it so noisy with the hairdryers and radio on. I’m starting to think I’m less tolerant of it all as I get older.

Maybe have a look for a new salon.

Delphiniumandlupins · 02/05/2026 22:10

My favourite ever hairdresser was virtually silent. Wee chat at the beginning about what I wanted done then just got on with it. Some of the other stylists were chattier but whole salon was calm.

JLou08 · 02/05/2026 22:37

YABU. A hair salon is not a place where you will find peace. Try a mobile hairdresser or one who works from home. If you want to keep the same hairdresser but want some peace try another activity, massage at a spa maybe.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 02/05/2026 23:18

Yep I think yabu. It's just a fact that the hairdresser's is not the place to go for peace
I love it but I'm a nosy bastard and I enjoy listening in to other chairs conversations.

Have you actually said ‘I’m not going to chat today — I’m reading’?

CaptainCalm · 02/05/2026 23:22

Is there not a difference between normal noise you’d expect in a salon: hair dryers, phone ringing, hair washing, normal hair related chit chat; and this noise and behaviour: staff having loud non-work related gossip / banter, and staff eating in the salon?

I go to a fairly low key place and yes there’s chit chat and interaction but the staff are working, not gossiping and certainly not eating.

queenceleste · 05/05/2026 08:35

My hairdresser is really calm and quiet it’s this salon she’s trying, it just has a demented vibe and the space is small and the boss sits in the space talking to everyone coming and going. It’s just too manic.

I can take hair dryer noise and stylists talking to customers but I don’t want to hear anything else as it’s essentially quite a relaxing experience for me and always has been in countless salons over the years.

But I think I’ve always been to salons that are a bit more professional - they know you’re the customer and you want to feel a bit looked after and not in the middle of a pub conversation between giddy eating manic people.

I love how my hairdresser chats with me, other customers and the other staff. It’s such a friendly environment

CoastalCalm · 05/05/2026 08:40

I’m the opposite spend all day on my own til husband gets back so I love hearing their banter and feeling part of that but small talk with the stylist not so much especially like a recent one who insisted on telling views on ‘illegals’ etc - never been back to that salon

Do we go to the same salon? 😂 I know exactly what you mean. The one I go is a tiny little space with 2 stylists and they talk (shout) at each other the whole time, lots of loud 'banter'. There's no tea, coffee, head massage or polite chat! I stick with it because it's the cheapest salon around and they do a perfect job of my awkward hair but it is draining.
