Why are bidets mandatory in Italy but barely any English people have them?

Id also love to know why we dont have them as the norm culturally

WaneyEdge · 30/04/2026 23:56

Used to be fairly common here. Had one in childhood home, as did the neighbours.

FancyNewt · 30/04/2026 23:59

We should have them . It's weird that we don't.

Ohthatsabitshit · 01/05/2026 00:01

Just have one put in?

MojoMoon · 01/05/2026 00:26

Italians on average have bigger bathrooms, perhaps?

We had one when I was a child (in the UK) but no way one would fit in my current bathroom

JustGiveMeReason · 01/05/2026 00:27

They used to be quite common in the UK, but went out of fashion some time ago.
I suspect there wouldn't be room in most bathrooms now as people want not only separate showers, but larger shower trays if they have the space.

Or run a hosepipe through the window. A simple DIY solution to a non issue

TimeToStopLurking · 01/05/2026 00:43

I had one in a house rental (only the) once. My landlord was Italian 😃

I don’t think they have ever been common in the UK.

PollyBell · 01/05/2026 00:44

I wouldnt want to have to clean either a seperate ''toilet'' or the adapations needed

Phew, just read 'bathrooms' as bottoms.

Phew, not only me then :)

It would be easy to have a bum gun fitted to toilets though like is SE Asia. That doesn't take up any space.

MinnieMountain · 01/05/2026 05:56

It's odd isn't it? DS got excited when he saw that the bathroom of our holiday let in Sardinia has one.

Hadenough32 · 01/05/2026 05:56

I've installed bidet systems on my toilets at home. I'm not a plumber or even a fan of DIY. Got them for £30 from amazon couple of years ago. They connect around the loo, really simple. Fair enough its cold but doesn't bother me any more. Couldn't stay anywhere now that didn't have a bidet.

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/05/2026 05:59

I'd love to have one. British people are surprisingly squeamish/prudish about them.

SwatTheTwit · 01/05/2026 06:20

Should be mandatory everywhere!

Or even better, Japanese toilets. I dream of having one.

NutellaEllaElla · 01/05/2026 06:22

I wonder if it’s because we’d freeze our arses off 90% of the year

Beenwhereyouareagain · 01/05/2026 06:30

During Covid, we installed a bidet seat. It fits under the toilet seat with controls on one side. If you hook it up to your warm water supply at the sink then you can choose the temperature yourself.

I think it was less than $100 on Amazon, and very easy to install. We bought another for the downstairs bath.

RaraRachael · 01/05/2026 06:30

They were quite popular in 70s new builds. I can remember my mother's friend boasting that they had a "by-dett".
New UK houses wouldn't have room plus culturally they're just not a thing here.

Morepositivemum · 01/05/2026 06:36

In Ireland and we once rented a place with a bidet. Everyone who visited would talk about it. Used it once, very much not a fan😅

It's illegal to fit these directly to your toilet in the UK (although I assume plenty of people do so anyway).

I wanted to get one, but the set up was going to be too complicated (needed to connect to a separate tank) so I gave up on the idea.

Just FYI this is definitely against water regs.

Pinklightning · 01/05/2026 06:50

They are great for washing feet after being on the beach.

Oh I didn't know that! How disappointing!
