Completely outrageous dog owner behaviour

Onepeople · 30/04/2026 21:36

Went for a walk this evening. We live by the sea and my walking route was along the sea front, popular with dog walkers. I am often bothered by dogs off their leads coming up and sniffing me, running round my ankles etc. I find it bloody annoying and inconsiderate really but, whatever.

Tonight though. Dog comes running up to me, leaps up and covers my trousers with his muddy paws. This annoys me and I tell the owner to control her animal. She gives the typical 'He's only saying hello!' response, which always makes me wonder whether I should go up to dog owners and slobber all over them as it's 'only saying hello' apparently. Anyway, the dog carries on jumping up at my so I kick out at it to make it go away.

Obviously in an ideal world I wouldnt have needed to do this. And I kicked out at it, rather than actually kicking it. I knew I wouldn't actually make contact.

Owner comes running up to me, suddenly showing a burst of speed she wasn't capable of when the dog was misbehaving. She screams 'Dont you dare kick my fucking dog!' then shoves me with two hands right in my chest. I almost lost my balance, but just about stayed upright before her friend dragged her away. I honestly thought she was going to punch me.

Not sure why I am writing this other than the fact that I am still a bit shocked and shaky.

I know that not all dog owners are like this, and that this woman seems to be particularly twatty. But God sometimes I hate them all. Bloody dogs and their bloody inconsiderate owners. Control your animals!

I live at a very dog friendly seaside town, on the edge of dog friendly moorland.

I think it’s more you don’t mind the annoying behaviour from dogs and their owners rather than you don’t have dogs doing it where you live I would imagine. I don’t think there’s any such place as non-dog friendly anywhere in the UK as it’s way too dog friendly! I wish it wasn’t and I would love some dog unfriendly places.

I do understand why people have and want dogs. I just don’t understand why they have to take them absolutely everywhere with them. That’s what’s bizarre and I think if the dogs could talk they would say they would much rather be left at home in their beds then dragged out to all the places that they’re crazy owners take them to.

No really, I've been out all day today and having been on this thread deliberately tried to get dogs' attention. Not once was any dog interested. I must have the kind of face/ankles dogs find easy to resist.

Talking of dog 'unfriendly' places, the summertime beach ban in my home town begins today as it does in many places. There are lots of dog free places.

I live by the sea too and walk on the seafront and beach every day.
My dog sadly died and I am very pleased to see dogs out and about.
Rarely though does one want to give me the time of day, they're normally busy with their own stuff going on - balls, sticks, playing with other dogs and their owners or in the sea.
I would love to know how all the " I am often bothered by dogs off their leads coming up and sniffing me, running round my ankles" people attract the dogs so effectively as I'd love to be able to do that so I can give them a tickle.

If she assaulted you OP you should have called the police and told her that she shoved you when you kicked out at her dog.

I wish I was like you! Dogs always, always gallup up to me and cover me in mud, hair and dribble. I can’t stand dogs! Why can’t dogs go to people like you who want to be covered in mud, hair and dribble? I swear they know I hate them and try to change my mind. They won’t.

I ride horses and I carry a long whip.
Its not for my horse.

I had an off lead dog (in a compulsory on leash area of course 🙄) eyeing off my horse as its owner dawdled behind it. My horse was a nervy boy and I had him halted, patting his neck to settle him. I said to him, "don't worry buddy, if he runs at you you can kill him." Never seen a dog get put on a leash so fast. The reality of the situation was, if the dog had of ran at him, he would have left me as a distraction while he high tailed it out of there.

Please don't kick an animal. Just walk in the opposite direction.

just control your pets! FFS.

A high percentage are highly entitled and sadly don’t even realise how anti social they and their dogs behaviour is. Mostly since Covid this has developed.

It is easy to ascertain if a person is a good kind person or not. Simply they love dogs. Dog haters on my view are bitter twisted people with no compassion for any other living thing. On my scale I could suggest where you might fit.

i don’t hate dogs, but people who don’t understand why others may not wish to be around them clearly have no empathy.

I think you’ve got this the wrong way round. People who are too messed up to relate to other humans prefer dogs because they don’t talk back. A sign of someone too toxic for society.

Is that how this works, we write some spurious polarising generalised rubbish about what other people think ? Did I do it right ?

Yes, those famous examples of a “good kind person”, Dennis Nilson, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer…. All loved their dogs.

Ridiculous can’t stand Dogs which is totally irrelevant to if I’m kind or not

the Kray twins had dogs and one of them was a dog breeder

jdb9803 · Yesterday 19:19

I hate owners that let their dogs off lead when they don't have recall and a have a tendancy to run up to other people or dogs
I say this as a dog owner - a dog that is never off lead in public
It's never good to kick an animal - but the owner is to blame for it as it was their irresponsibility that caused the situation and you have a right to protect yourself

I am autistic and struggle to relate to other people. However, my dog was the perfect companion for me. She got me out of the house, and she did not judge me.
She died in January.
But yes, I am too toxic for society.

YeOldeGreyhound · Yesterday 19:22

YANBU for being annoyed. Any responsible dog owner would not be letting their dog jump on people.
My dog did for a while, but that was when she was a puppy.
But YABU for trying to kick the dog.

Ladygardenerinderby · Yesterday 19:23

What she did was wrong you should of called the police as you say she assaulted you but I really can’t condone kicking out at a dog either

Hadenough32 · Yesterday 19:25

I got an air spray on amazon..dogs bloody hate it. I just blast it in their faces when they run up to Me and my dogs. They leg it away instantly and their owner is none the wiser.

Yes - and Hitler was a dog lover too.

Dear God - the level of debate/discussion on MN sometimes...it's depressing.

Bloody hell I've read some shit on here but nothing quite like this.

I despise dogs jumping up at me. It's not because I don't like dogs. I just despise them jumping up at me and scratching me or ruining my clothes.

Ehhhhh the mumsnetters who can’t determine reality from dramatic effect.

The OP never mentioned being in fear of being “viciously savaged” or anything close. So my analogy is fine. You’ve added extreme layers that didn’t exist in the original situation.

I think I see the ridiculousness here…

I'm deeply embarrassed for you.

Yes, and many of them are, because the vast majority have no idea how to be a responsible dog owner.

You can prove that by looking around. You can't prove people are horrible people if they don't like dogs.

I was a responsible dog owner, but apparently I am toxic to society for having a dog to being with.

No I don't, and please don't argue with me about a point I didn't originally make? I didn't say you are toxic to society for having a dog, I said the irresponsible ones are?

TrixieFatell · Yesterday 19:38

I once had two staffys jump in my car where my baby was still strapped in his car seat. The owner thought I was being extra because I told to her control her fucking dogs. Prime example of a dickhead owner.

I have a dog. He doesn't jump up at people and he's on a lead when I know he would not be listening to me. I like my dog, I recognise others don't.

If you don't want people to kick your dog, don't have it running up to people out of control. It's your job to look after your pet, if you can't then don't have one.

OP that sounds quite an event, hope you are not too shaken by that idiot owner.
