Local park has requested no children’s parties in the summer season - AIBU to think they can’t actually enforce this?

Which would be fine if thats what happens, but as has been demonstrated on here these parties often monopolise the place stopping other people using the space or the equipment.

Only for a couple of hours surely? Just share the space

Well if they shared it there wouldn’t be a problem would there 🙄

Exactly. The problem is that the sort of people who do this want exclusive use of a public space. And if you want exclusive use you need to pay for it. Cant afford that? Tough. Share or dont have a party. But they dont.

It’s only better for the two people who chose to breed them.

No breeding from me I chose not to have kids.

Which rather begs the question.....where is your horse in this race?

You dont suffer from selfish assholes who take over an entire park for a party, and you are not a selfish assholes who has taken over an entire park for your kids party.

Do you have hobbies?

It's obviously not reasonable for individual families to monopolise whole spaces, but I also think the council is being a bit unreasonable too. The couple of park parties I've been to have been low income families who wouldn't be able to pay for private halls etc, and have been very civilised and considerate.

Lots of groups have anti social elements that spoil it for everyone else (dog owners, groups of teenagers) but we don't ban them all from parks because most people recognise it's a few idiots.

Flatandhappy · Yesterday 02:18

Very common where I live (Sydney) and it doesn’t seem to cause problems. Maybe because spaces tend to be bigger so there is generally room for all? A lot of parks have public BBQs which makes catering easy and some near me do have areas (usually undercover with tables) you can hire through the Council. It’s a great way to do whole class parties in the younger years but yes, it does rely on people not being dicks.

PollyBell · Yesterday 02:25

The sign sounds sensible the area should be for everyone

Riapia · Yesterday 02:37

People take food and drink, put up wind breaks and play games on the beach.
Nobody seems to object to that.

It's because some parents stop other people using the play equipment or try and stop other people entering certain areas, that's not possible at the beach so it doesn't cause an issue when people take over a little patch of beach.

A few kids and parents are not going to take over an entire park.

Asking me for my hobbies really I think your going of topic.
Let people be.

But the point is they do take over the entire facility. A small park may have 3 or 4 picnic benches. Parents are coming and putting reserved signs on these, then having loud music. I've also seen bunting attached to trees with nails and other means used to stop non party goers from using the facilities of the parks.

This and other monopolisation of parks is becoming a big issue in our area. Dog walkers walking multiple dogs, boot camps, yoga sessions etc. These parks are shared areas not designed for specific groups making land grabs and not allowing others access.

rainbowunicorn22 · Yesterday 09:09

i suppose it is a public place for all to enjoy and if people are enjoying a quiet summer afternoon they may not want kids running round making a lot of noise
also if people start putting up bouncy castles etc they are taking up space and also it would kill grass so more money for the council to replace or repair it
personally i would not care and if you live in a place with no garden or small garden its nice to have somewhere to go.

Flamingojune · Yesterday 09:29

So just to clarify, we're not talking about a park in which its perfectly normal and acceptable to see groups of people get together to hang out or play games, we're are in fact talking about a playground?

Its better to have a party outside than a bunch of kids running around your home.

Maybe for you, not necessarily for park users

Why does not having kids mean you don’t have a horse in the race. Do people without children never use a park?? 🤔

Not an entire park but you do understand what a play area is, yes?

If you read the thread, you'll see a lot of MNetters complaining about them taking over that, and reserving the surrounding benches and picnic tables.

Not to mention nailing decorations to trees and littering the place with party poppers.

So its the party poppers that you object to? Agree litter is awful but its loveky seeing people enjoy themselves and its not forever

Yes, this - I have noticed a his in my local park. The council have put up some signs re general conduct -e.g. no loud music - but people just ignore it.

Hellometime · Yesterday 12:30

I’d presume the council have had complaints about parties monopolising the area eg reserving benches or cordoning off equipment. The sign is clear to park users so they know if they are there and someone has set up the picnic benches for a party tea but aren’t actually sat there it’s fine to move things and sit there.
