As per title. Just got me thinking as I doubt my 5yo in year 1 knows who the head teacher is, what about your kids. What age of year did they start becoming aware? Just curious and bored as u can prob tell 🫠

Mine did in primary and still do at secondary. Heads at both schools were/are visible and approachable.

I find that surprising she would study about heads involvement.

DS was at a four form entry primary which was split in many ways into the phases with slightly different uniforms and had heads of each phase. there was also a special needs unit attached to the school. So lots of pupils.

But overall head was out there greeting the kids, running event days etc. sent then video messages in COVID reassuring them. All the children knew him and he knew most of their names.

Yes, she knows the name of every child.

Head Teacher at my DCs’ primary used to read a story to reception once a week to make sure they knew him and he got to know them a bit.

DD's head did as well.

DS was at a four form entry primary

DD's school had only 5 classes with overlapping year groups in each class - and it was ofsted outstanding.

Yeah from week 1 of reception, so 5.

but Head stands at the school gates most mornings and it’s quite a small school anyway. we also went to the preschool at the primary & we’d walked past the head several times.

I remember telling my daughter she was the “boss of the school” and that she was the boss of all the other teachers

(DD understood the concept of a “boss” so that worked)

Yes, of course. The headteacher had a little meeting with each child before they even started school.

scrivette · 30/04/2026 22:11

Yes and they frequently tell me they miss the previous headteacher as they are not so keen on the current one.

My youngest started secondary school in September last year, but both of mine have known who their headmistress or headmaster was right from their first day in reception. They both went to small primary school/ prep schools though, and everyone knew everyone as there were only 70-80 pupils spread across 4 classes. So in terms of staff there was 4 class teachers with 4 HLTAs, 1 headmaster, 1 cleaner and 1 cook, plus a 1:1 TA for a SEN child. We also had a meeting with the head before each of them started at the schools.

Yes of course. Mind you she was a personal friend before DS even started
