AIBU to recommend our local European supermarket for unusual jams and yoghurts?

We go to our local European supermarket because they have far better choices if jam and and yoghurts ... I recommend you all visit!

Yes they have the standard strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant and apricot jams and vanilla
yogurts etc

But ours also has jams of ;kiwi and gooseberry , fruits of the forest, pineapple, sour cherry, peach, blueberry, orange and pineapple etc

Yoghurts are more interesting - apple and cinnamon yoghurt, tropical flavour fromage fais, strawberry and banana yogurt, mango and passion fruit, coconut and banana, straciatella, biscuit cream, 8 grain pineapple and banana etc

They have fun little "kids" yogurts a bit like Muller corner, with marshmallows or mini smarties

Worth a little expedition!

Does anyone else have any recommendations? We also like the paprika puffs you can get with a tiger on the front 😋

They usually have a lot of different flavoured herbal and fruit teas. A much better variety than in your average supermarket.

I often buy grains from there eg, millet, buckwheat etc.

Lots of pickled vegetables also. Good for cottage cheese as well

I love having a look round these shops...🙂

I used to love the 24 hour Turkish supermarket down the road from where we used to live (nothing as useful as that where we live now!).

They had a whole aisle of honey. A whole aisle! You could buy big jars with honeycomb in, all kinds of varieties 😋

Used to really enjoy a browse round there.

We don't have a Turkish supermarket but we have a really big Asian one and I'm developing an unfortunate mochi habit.
Must try the Eastern European ones - a bit more out of the way unfortunately but I've just realised one is near DS guitar lesson. Can I be in and out in half an hour? It is very small but on the other hand, honey.

DanaScullysLegoHair · 30/04/2026 09:17

We don't really have any Eastern European supermarkets nearby but we have several Abu Bakr stores, I think they're quite a big chain.

I love going in for big bunches of fresh coriander, chillis and limes etc. They do some nice flatbreads in different sizes, rows and rows of spices, oils, nuts, tahini, sauces and the like. Lots of different teas to try.

But THE BEST things are the fresh curries and samosas they do. They have lots of other fresh foods, snacks and sides to take away - absolutely delicious!

We have loads of Polish mustards and tomato sauce. DH swears by their lagers with his curry on Saturday night. If you see Wawel chocolate grab a bar or two as it's beautiful, especially the cherry filled one. The pretzel sticks come in different flavours too. Can recommend the bacon (bakon) ones

tnorfotkcab · 30/04/2026 10:06

oh they winiary mayonnaise that is the same as Kewpie that everyone harps on about... and half the price!

You can buy fresh yeast there.

Much better than the dry stuff.

Jam is one of the things I always bring back from Germany - there is nothing better than Mövenpick! Although having said that, the Aldi posh range has a really superior blackcurrant if that floats your boat as much as it does mine.

You should buy honey that is produced as close to where you live as possible because it will have the best active ingredients for you in your location. I don’t buy certain products except for UK produced due to air miles, supporting British farmers etc, e.g. butter, jam, some cheeses, meat and fish, vegetables and fruit if possible etc. added to that, we make the best biscuits and crisps! 😹

I have a feeling the honey thing is an urban myth, at least, for allergies - certainly I heard from an allergist (proper doctor with scientific articles but who puts reels on FB rather than person I know).

I only buy British honey now I don't have that supermarket. But honey you have to be careful with because a lot that is blended or mixed sources is actually diluted with sugar syrup. You have to make sure you're buying single origin to be sure it's 100% honey.

But I do hear you on that.

Ohhhhh another thing I used to get from Asian shops is big bags of nuts. So cheap. I can munch my way through a bag of pistachios in no time.

Even our local Tesco has half an aisle of Indian produce. I always buy almonds there, a really big bag for £7, less sometimes with discount card.

M&S carry a good selection of proper honey.

This has sadly, been proved not to be true. But buying local produce is always a good way to support local businesses.

Lays all-dressed crisps are the best crisps in the world and I won’t hear any counter-arguments! Canadian though, so probably not available in an Eastern European supermarket Grin

Davros · 30/04/2026 17:30

Interesting about the honey, maybe it’s a myth. I’m still very particular about my honey sources!! 🐝

I read it’s that the honey has to come from something silly like half a mile from you, and almost no one has honey made that close to them. I still buy local honey though, but it travels about 5 miles to my door so I don’t think it has any allergy benefits.

SpanThatWorld · 30/04/2026 18:09

I am very partial to carrot jam from my local Turkish supermarket.

Also, muhammara which is a spicy red spread made from peppers, walnuts and pomegranate which goes really well with hummus.

Edited because I forgot to mention Basra date syrup.

Where can I find these fabulous supermarkets! What should I search for to check for any in my area?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/04/2026 18:17

TBF, Longley Farm from sunny (today) West (just) Yorkshire to that kind of range of yoghurt flavours too.

Just try and find any Polish / European supermarket. They're often smaller and not chains.
