You can still get a job with a bad interview?

Did an internal interview and I wasn't answering the questions well so scored low. Reckon I still have a chance? Hiring manager told me to apply

Depends entirely on the organisation.

Ive worked some places where internal interviews are just a formality, they have someone in mind and the hiring manager just goes through the motions for HR.

I’ve been at others where you have the hiring manager and 2 independent people on the panel to make sure everyone is scored fairly and if you balls up the interview it doesn’t matter how much the hiring manager wants you…

What if it's just two people in the interview? Hiring manager and colleague

depends on the competition…..

Jellycatspyjamas · 29/04/2026 09:20

It really depends on who else has interviewed. If there’s a stronger candidate on the day I’d expect them to be appointed. I’ve also not appointed at all when the internal candidate has screwed up the interview and other candidates didn’t score strongly enough. Otherwise what’s the point in going through all the time and effort to interview people.

PrincessFluffyPants · 29/04/2026 09:33

Depends how well the hiring manager knows you and how good your reputation is within the company. If they are hiring "properly" then you would be scored for your responses, it's a good indicator of your knowledge and strengths. Did you not bother to prepare and are now panicking? If you hadn't bothered to prepare and it was obvious I would presume you weren't taking the interview seriously and that attitude would follow into your job. Best of luck though!

VividDeer · 29/04/2026 09:35

Where i work you still have to get a pass mark for the interview, even if you were the best. Or they readvertise

Stompythedinosaur · 29/04/2026 09:35

My experience is there's usually a minimum bar for being appointable, but if you reach that you can get a job even if you didn't do great, if there's no one better.

neilshair · 29/04/2026 09:56

If you scored low then it’s unlikely tbh. There will be a level set and if you don’t meet that they might not take you on regardless of whether or not the other candidates are worse. Often what happens is nobody gets the position and the job is re advertised.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 29/04/2026 09:59

It all depends what the HR person on the panel feels in their waters on the day. You could have the most brilliant qualifications and been acting up doing the job for months but if HR prefers someone who hits the touchy feely spot you are buggered.

BillieWiper · 29/04/2026 11:28

Unless others scored even more poorly it's probably unlikely. But it really does depend on the competition, and your other attributes and how much they feel they want you to have the job.

But it seems peculiar to add questions in with scores and then hire someone who gets low ones? Why bother guage people in this way only to disregard it. But you never know.

No I was just interviewed and haven't heard yet

I did an interview for a promotion upgrade, and I thought I had done it badly, but in the end I passed it, so you never know. I started off all nervous and tense, but I got better towards the end of it.
