To think saving on Universal Credit is extremely difficult?

FirmGreyMember · Yesterday 20:42

It feels like Universal Credit doesn’t really leave much room for saving once basic living costs are covered. I know in theory people say to put even small amounts aside but in practice it seems very difficult when most of the money goes on essentials.

AIBU to think there’s very little opportunity to build savings on UC?

I would never ever kill myself because my family have been through it but there were times I thought they would be better off without me and there have been people on this thread saying people with mh issues shouldn't get benefits

As everyone has said, it's not meant as an income to save, more a temporary safety net. This is a daft/goady/insensitive question as so many people who work FT can't save. With all the free extras amd subsided CT you are actually saving as otherwise you would have to pay for dentist/glasses/rent.

You tell me how I could save on 400 pounds a month. There are no free extras. If not for my mum when I was living on 317 pounds a month I would have gone under

RockNToll · Today 19:30

Benefits are there as a safety net for unemployment or if you have to temporarily reduce from full time hours due to redundancy etc.

Fwiw I think the families of those on benefits should step up and help them when they need additional money, it seems mean that relatives don't help those with disabilities etc and just seem to pass them to the state to fund.

SpryTaupeTurtle · Today 19:31

People on UC don't automatically get a dentist and they also don't automatically get full rent and council tax paid either

My mum is a single parent and a pensioner. Hth

So many people on here hate people on disability benefits.

SpryTaupeTurtle · Today 19:35

I've had it. Go have a life changing accident and then get back to me

But makes a great headline for people who think disabled people are scroungers I guess.

Exactly this. If a person needs carers, day service or residential care there benefits are taken to fund it. If in residential care they will be left with around £30 a week spending/living money. Money is given and then taken when you are severely disabled and/or need care.

How fucking dare anyone say my family didn't do enough when I broke my leg. How fucking dare you.

It is not temporary if you are disabled.
Not al areas have CT support. Not everyone can even find an NHS dentist, and not everyone needs glasses. Not everyone rents, and if you live in a private rental, UC often wont cover what the rent is anyway so you have to make up the shortfall with the rest of your benefits.
If someone on benefits budgets well and can save a little, then that is surely a good thing. it is vital to have some money saved as you never know what is round the corner.

Is the broken leg the reason for your long-term benefits?

My DF died in Feb, and my mum is struggling for money herself as she is suddenly a single income household. Still working despite being a pensioner.

My mum did not pass me to the state to fund. I smashed my leg to pieces and even then I had to fight to get disability benefits. Shut up

They are not long term. Hope that helps. Got it!!!!

SpryTaupeTurtle · Today 19:48

I apparently have long term benefits despite saying otherwise multiple times on this thread. My disability benefits lcwra are stopping in two weeks and my adp is stopping in Sept

SpryTaupeTurtle · Today 19:50

Im reporting this thread.

SpryTaupeTurtle · Today 19:54

Reported. I have had enough of being questioned on here. That's it
I will not be accused of being on long term benefits when I am not and when my family thought they were going to lose me. Stop questioning people.

I got an award for 18 months until my leg healed.

I have been interrogated on similar threads too, and accused of being a benefit fraud because someone can't possibly post on MN if they have a mental illness.
There are some very nasty people on here. Saying to ignore them seems futile when seeing their posts makes you see red. I get it too.
Just refuse to engage with them... they do not ask such intrusive questions in good faith. You were assessed by the DWP, and got awarded what you were entitled to. That has nothing to do with anyone else and you do not owe anyone an explanation.

Please be kind to yourself ❤

I was stalked and threatened and then arrested because of my stalker. I have ptsd. I'm unwell. But despite that I won't ever claim benefits again. Leave me alone. My benefits are not long term. Leave me alone. I broke my leg in three places and I could not walk for six months. Leave me alone

I had to battle to get the benefits I did. Leave me alone. How dare you suggest someone who couldn't walk and felt like killing themselves after being stalked and arrested doesn't deserve benefits. Leave me alone

SpryTaupeTurtle · Today 20:05

I'm not on long term benefits. On any level. This place is a cess pit

Ah you advocate the Mediterranean/familial model of welfare? Too patchy and too reliant on women to provide unpaid care. It's not a good idea to base a welfare model on women's invisible labour. In my opinion anyway.

SpryTaupeTurtle · Today 20:22

My lcwra is stopping at the end of this month. I made it clear on multiple posts - but I'm apparently on long term benefits. Retract your lies please or I'll be doing something about this

Great. Good for you. Unfortunately other families don’t and prefer to leave their families claiming off the state, which is why we’re so skint as a country these days. Personally there is no way I’d claim a penny from the state until I have exhausted all other avenues, and my family are of a similar mindset. We help each other.

You don't have to justify yourself or explain. Don't rise to it. It's what they want.
