To ask neighbour to not keep spraying water over the fence?

summerrrrrr · 28/04/2026 18:27

For a week or so now my neighbour has been using a sprinkler to water her lawn.

The thing is the water keeps coming over the fence and all on my washing and patio.

She knows it goes over as I have seen her in the garden standing by the fence.

I believe her grass has died and she is trying to regrow it but would it be pety to ask her to try and avoid the sprinkler going over the fence?

I don't think it would be petty. Maybe she realises it goes over the fence but doesn't realise it goes on to your washing and would be happy to stop.

Or she could say DGAF and then you know what you're dealing with.

ThejoyofNC · 28/04/2026 18:32

Tell her it's on too high and she needs to turn it down because it's soaking your washing. Most sprinklers aren't just a case of on or off, she should be able to lower it so it doesn't go over the fence.

BillieWiper · 28/04/2026 18:53

Of course just speak to her. Ideally while it's happening do you can show what it's doing.

I'm sure she doesn't want to deliberately sabotage your laundry. Just be polite and friendly but firm.

How high are the sprinklers, or how low is your washing if it’s going onto your washing?
Going against the grain, but maybe you’re being a little unreasonable, it’s only water, and they are only trying to tend to their grass here, rain water falls on your patio doesn’t it?

A hose will soak the washing though, and it will take much longer to dry, and most people don’t put their washing out in the rain.

Knock the door hey Jane are you aware your sprinklers are on too high and they are soaking me when I’m out, my washing drying etc and my patio etc could you turn it down a bit? Thanks 🙏

AgnesMcDoo · 28/04/2026 18:59

Of course it’s reasonable for mask neighbour to behave reasonably

Fair enough, just googled what sprinklers actually look like, as in my head I was visualising something feeble and ankle high

Zanatdy · 28/04/2026 19:00

Yes just ask her to turn it down or re-direct as it’s going on your washing.

usedtobeaylis · 28/04/2026 19:01

No, tell her. We had a sprinkler and we couldn't adjust it enough so we ended up not using it as it's not fair on the neighbours (except th@e first time we turned it off their kids asked us to turn it back on 😆). Ask her to adjust it or move it. Totally reasonable.

Really hoping you are playing devil's advocate, because there's no sense to anything you wrote. How have you managed to conclude that OP could be unreasonable for not wanting her own laundry IN HER OWN GARDEN to be made wet by the neighbour's sprinkler, without concluding maybe the neighbour is the unreasonable one for not simply having basic respect and consideration for her neighbour and ensuring her water isn't spraying the OP's garden? Be serious.

Be serious? Nah, I’m good, I think you’re a little too serious, I gave an opinion, there was nothing hostile in my response, and I also did come back later to say fair enough, when I actually googled what sprinklers in a domestic garden look like. You on the other hand are far too serious if you feel you need to capitalise words to me, we are talking about watering the garden and water, and I’d rather not be on your wavelength thanks

The sprinkler is set quite high and goes over both fences (her other neighbour as well).

My patio and kitchen door is right next to the fence.

When I had my bins on my drive (nowhere near her window) she asked us to move them due to "hygiene reasons"and we obliged so helpfully she gives us the same courtesy.

I am going to ask her when I see her.

I think this would be fine to ask. I would pose it as a "I'm sure you're not aware of this but the sprinklers are spraying over the fence and this is hitting our washing and patio, would you mind adjusting them a bit" type of thing. Or just pop a note in to the same effect.

dpbarbie9 · 01/05/2026 20:08

This has been happening to us last few days too. Neighbours sprinkler goes on for about an hour

summerrrrrr · Yesterday 00:17

It was happening yesterday so I opened the window to ask her to lower the sprinkler and it is as if she knew as all of a sudden the sprinkler went lower.

It was on a lower setting again today and didn't go over the fence.

So glad it has stopped and can now enjoy the garden without the fear of getting soaked.
