AIBU to wonder how anyone manages a 10-day thrush treatment?

I really really apologise for how much TMI this is.

I’ve been getting relentless thrush for months now, which I suspect is thanks to my good friend Lululemon and daily intensive workouts. It goes away after one dose of canestan but always comes back quickly.

(it’s definitely thrush, incidentally).

The doctor has given me the 10 day dose of treatment now, which he thinks may help properly kick it once and for all.

In my experience though, the day after using a pessary is always gross, with remnants of said pessary reappearing throughout the day. I’ve always found I can’t do anything active at all really. I just stay at home and wait for it to leave.

How on earth is it practical to do that for 10 day? How does anyone do it? Is there some secret to name it NOT the most uncomfortable, messy thing in the world?

Sorry if that’s an utterly ridiculous question but the thought of it is making my skin crawl!

Side note but maybe you should try cotton or merino wool leggings (moisture wicking) if this issue keeps happening due to sportswear. Natural fibres are breathable

Hi op you don’t use toilet paper with anything added to it do you I had thrush once for absolutely ages back & forth to dr then someone mentioned about toilet paper and I was using the perfumed type or added something or other once I stopped this thrush eventually left not to return thankfully.

I had this for months had my coil removed then treated ans put bsck in 3 months later. It started after a painful smear test and I surmise that it was that that triggered it

Have you had your blood glucose levels checked?

Pads and period pants are not good for thrush though.

I think OP this is the old chestnut of gynae problems being dismissed. Ive just had same issue for BV - given pessaries when tablets have sorted it in the past. It’s so annoying having to fight for these sort of things.

I agree, I seem to be on a doom loop with thrush and pessaries that isn't working. I haven't tried the tablets though , I didn't realise that was even an option until reading this thread.

If you are getting recurrent thrush and have a partner is he being treated too? Men can harbour the infection but not necessarily show any symptoms. Do you use sex toys? If so are sure they are thoroughly clean before use and clean afterwards. If you wear a G string stop. The thin string between your legs can rub backwards and forwards can transfer microbes from your back plumbing to your front plumbing. Avoid man made materials that do not breath. Cotton knickers are better. The yeast that is Thrush loves a nice warm damp environment. Also when using toilet paper make sure you wipe form from to back. If you use a bath rather than shower then do not use bubble bath or anything like that in the water. Showering is better. Use Femfesh (or supermarkets own brand ) ph friendly wash for your vagina. Try to pee after sex. Use Canestan combi either a solid pessary or soft one or the internal cream with a tube of cream for the outside. The solid pessaries are a bit rough when they come out of you and make your inner labia a bit sore. If you use panti liners for the mess use a cotton faced type. Hope all these tips help.

More likely resistance to Fluconazole but it you haven’t tried it yet you could try a couple of doses which you can buy over the counter and do the prescription treatment if it doesn’t clear.

Don’t waste an appointment going back just because it’s messy.

Pads seems pretty counter productive though, you need cotton underwear to keep things breathing. Wearing pantyliners and pads can exacerbate thrush.

i have done the ten day and for a few months it went, i think my menopause is the problem, if you are that age think about hormone cream. yes the pessaries can be very messy but wear a panty liner so you dont end up with it in your knickers its worth doing

ThejoyofNC · 30/04/2026 11:12

Are you doing anything to prevent it OP? You're blaming the gym and leggings but surely after this treatment you want to try and stop it coming back?

Chickadee001 · 30/04/2026 11:39

Oh my days - sorry but you just have to get on with it like the rest of us -use pads to catch the residue and any other cream you're using! You've not had a baby then after which you seem to bleed for an age?!

horlickstablets · 30/04/2026 11:53

Just use a liner. I did a thrush treatment once a week every week for the best part of 6 months

Edited

I’ve had two! The last one about 10 weeks ago….

i think I’m just sick of pads and leakage! I was glad to get back to life!

I work in fitness so was in my yoga leggings right up to 3 days before delivery.

It was really really bad when I was pregnant but I expected it to go away after that.

meant to say no tights or tight trousers/jeans. if you can wear a nice loose dress ideal time of year and cotton pants only. i found peeing before and after sex does help with things UTIs and thrush too

I will go back and ask for the oral medication! No idea why I’ve not been prescribed that.

No need to go back given GPhas seen you once. Just ring reception and tell them what you want, that pessaries don’t work.
they may offer a phone call at least if they need to.
My GP wouldn't, theyd just change it.
