For pulling over briefly to watch a Hare?

I was heading home on a long drive earlier today and I was on a very long, very straight road and I spotted a Hare loping across the road about 100yds in front of me, when I got to where I’d seen it go, I saw it sat in the field so I pulled up and watched it, and I even took a little video! As I mentioned, the road was very long and straight so I could see a mile in both directions and there was nothing coming whatsoever so I wasn’t inconveniencing any other drivers. All in all I was on the side of the road for no more than a minute before it bounded off and disappeared.

DH rang me a little while later and I excitedly told him about the Hare and that I’d sat and watched it and he made me feel a bit silly for being excited about seeing one. He said they’re ‘not exactly rare’ and that he sees them all the time. The thing is, he used to be a roadworker and now he’s a builder so he’s spent years and countless hours driving endless country roads, so no doubt he has seen loads of Hares over the years. But I’m a SAHM and rarely go out of town. I obviously don’t see Hares on the school run, or in the gym or in town at the shops so it is a rare sighting for me!

Would anyone else have been excited to see a Hare like I was? Here’s a screenshot of the video, sorry it’s so grainy, by the time I’d grabbed my phone it had gotten much further away from me so I had to zoom in!

Not unreasonable at all. Wildlife is lovely to see, regardless of if it's common or not. I still get excited to see slow worms in my garden and I've been seeing them regularly for 16 years!

DH & DS both came out to see the newt I found on the weekend - first one I've seen in the garden.

ERthree · 28/04/2026 16:54

I am so glad you took the time to stop and watch. Such moments fill your soul full of joy💛

Createausername1970 · 28/04/2026 16:56

Nothing wrong with that.

DH and I pulled over safely to gaze at field of Llamas.

Saw a lizard outside work the other day, everyone was excited to see it!

Absolutely nothing wrong with being excited about nature and this beautiful world we’re blessed to live in. Appreciating these little moments is what life is about.

Rachel2409 · 28/04/2026 18:26

Well done for appreciating our wonderful wildlife. So many people don’t. I’m out in the countryside a lot and still feel magical every time I see a hare or anything else. My teenage girls are the same. I pity people who go through life not giving a damn. They’re the sad ones, not us 😊

BrickBiscuit · 28/04/2026 18:37

I've been delighted to come across a couple of groups of mad March hares bounding and boxing in the fields near us, before coming to the end of their season. Mind you, we also watch the sheep through the window most days. Lots of roadkill on show round here too. In my city days it was foxes, rats and parakeets.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 28/04/2026 18:49

Was excited to see quite a few lone hares and lots of groups/herds? of deer, and their far too cute young, on my recent train journeys. There seems to be many more deer about nowadays.

what's the collective noun for deer?

Tomikka · 28/04/2026 18:55

One morning I made multiple multiple stops to take photos of the sunrise behind me

Prepotente · 28/04/2026 19:30

I’d have stopped and watched too. I’ve not seen a hare in years. Back when I was a kid there was a big meadow and in the spring there would be loads of them boxing.
Sadly they’ve built a huge housing estate on it now and no more hares.

When we were in Scotland a couple of years ago a pine marten came into the garden and was robbing peanuts from the bird feeders. Both me and my husband were entranced.

WhitegreeNcandle · 28/04/2026 19:32

I feel you need to read the book Raising Hare.

Totally ok to stop. I’m a farmer and one of the blissfully wonderful things about my job is pausing to watch nature x

nomas · 28/04/2026 19:36

I would have stopped if it’s safe. I stopped recently to pet some new lambs recently through a fence.

But did you stop in the road? That’s dangerous, no matter if no vehicles are around. You can easily get complacent and get hit.

I get excited to see a squirrel never mind a hare so you shouldn't feel bad for what you did!

Edited

I once had a squirrel come in through my bedroom window (curtains still closed) and scurry along my windowsill, scaring the shit out of me. So I still point them out to the children but they're on my naughty list.

MNLurker1345 · 28/04/2026 19:40

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens, now treat
your to the brilliant book, ‘Raising Hare’ by Chloe Dalton.

PropertyD · 28/04/2026 19:47

I live fairly rurally but saw a hare a few weeks ago. They are lovely and much bigger than I thought they were! They also seem to be extremely interested in what is going on around them

loislovesstewie · 28/04/2026 19:51

While in County Cork I saw several Irish hares. I stood quietly and one hopped a few feet from me, sat up and looked at me. I felt very privileged to see one so close.

ChaToilLeam · 28/04/2026 19:54

I love hares! My friend lived in the countryside and there was one in the field by his house. 🐇

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 28/04/2026 19:54

I have never seen a hare but I would be super excited if I did.

rwalker · 28/04/2026 19:56

Unfortunately you picked the wrong audience

Gymnopedie · 28/04/2026 20:01

I get excited at seeing all sorts of wildlife. Your husband is a misery.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 28/04/2026 20:05

I love watching hares, owls, the space station...all sorts.

magiciansgirlonce · 28/04/2026 20:06

Yes I definitely would

hoyalinearis · 28/04/2026 20:13

I see buzzards most days but still get excited and have a little stare when I see one driving! So YANBU

FettleOfKish · 28/04/2026 20:19

To be fair I was quite excited to see a dead Hare at the side of the road in Sweden last week (and a dead Moose 🥺), as I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before! YANBU .

Squirrelsnut · 28/04/2026 20:21

Gosh, I'm 55 and I've only seen two hares in my life! The second was last weekend and I slowed right down to see it properly ( after checking the road was clear).
