So I’ve just heard about the recall of the ‘sand toys’ due to the asbestos found in them, my son had a ‘cool cucumber ‘ stretch toy from either Asda or Tesco. I found out that it burst in his room when I found this and asked for it, he stretch it burst, went all over his face and body and on his floor in a corner behind bed. I went and cleared it by ripping up those carpet tiles it was on, now I asked him if he washed his hands and face and he said he can’t remember ! What if he injested this? Will he get cancer when he’s older? I touched the sand too and probably my younger children were exposed to. Do I have to rip up the rest of the carpet tiles? He said it went on his bed too and he just took it off’ I’m literally having a panic attack

Have you had a look to see if his toy was on the list of recalls?

Tunnocks34 · 27/04/2026 23:26

He’ll be fine, a brief exposure to something that ‘may contain trace amounts of asbestos’ is very different from the kind of long-term, repeated inhalation that’s linked to asbestos-related illnes like cancer. Your son getting some on his skin or possibly in his mouth during that one incident doesn’t mean he’s going to develop cancer later in life, it won’t have any impact on him.

Youve cleaned it up off your son, and the floor, you don’t need to tear up the rest of your flooring, normal clean, washing bedding, and a regular hoover is enough.

I saw something that said they would need to grind up the grains of sand and inhale them. I understand the worry though.

There is a small chance that the listed toys might be contaminated. Your son's toy is not on the list, normal vacuuming and washing will be fine to clear up any spilt sand. People who have health issues related to asbestos exposure generally worked with it in large quantities.

You really need to relax. His toys not on the list. Our house has asbestos in the loft and on our bedroom ceiling - its safe levels. Anyone who gets cancer from asbestos was working with it day in day out at its highest levels.

I hope these comments put you at ease. If you find you're still obsessing in a few days, I'd look into getting some help for health anxiety.

Op I think it's fine honestly. We also had a product was recalled from my sons bedroom. Now it didn't burst but my feeling on it was that unless there's long term exposure it's highly unlikely to create an issue. Obviously if any level of risk is identified there would need to be a recall out of an abundance of caution. You need to find out if your toy is from an affected batch before panicking.
