Are you still having regular dental check ups

Has anyone else given up on going to the dentist in this col crisis? Seems like visits to the dentist are a luxury for most people these days.
Private dentists are expensive & getting an nhs dentist is like trying to get blood out of a stone. Even if you do find one you still have to pay something.
I can imagine lots of people with bad teeth in the future

Yes but it’s every 2 years

I'm not intending to sound like a dick but checkups are free in Scotland and treatment is incredibly cheap, so thankfully this isn't an issue.

Free at the point of use but we are paying for it with higher taxes. I don't object to it, but its definately not free.

Yes but only every 2 years at my Scottish NHS dentist and I have to book my appointment 6 months in advance.

So Scotland is still shit just in our own special tartan way

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 27/04/2026 21:46

Had no problem finding a NHS dentist around a year ago after moving to new area. Go every 6 months for checkup and hygenist. Worth every penny.

Saltwatersoothe · 27/04/2026 21:46

I'm in Scotland and I cannot get an nhs dentist (been trying years). Instead I pay £22 a month for a treatment plan, 10% off treatments. I go phases without going and then pay the price in private extractions, fillings etc. I find the whole battle to get an nhs dentist and postcode lottery really unfair. Even my kids aren't nhs.

StopFeckingSnoring · 27/04/2026 21:46

Yes. I would give up the hairdresser way before I’d give up the dentist.

MrsAmaretto · 27/04/2026 21:48

I’m on both the nhs dentist waiting list and the private dentist waiting list 😭 Have been for the last 2 years!

Firefly1987 · 27/04/2026 21:48

I lost my NHS place after Covid. They reminded me a couple times after it was cancelled to make another appointment and then must've took me off. I wish they had warned me as I definitely would've gone if I'd known they were about to take me off the NHS but appreciate it's not their job to chase people up.

I am very very much regretting it now and have absolutely no idea how much needs doing and what it would cost to go private but as soon as I have the funds it's top priority. I am a prize idiot for losing my NHS place!

Criteria16 · 27/04/2026 21:50

I go for hygienist and check up every six months but I have a private insurance that pays for it

XenoBitch · 27/04/2026 21:53

I have a check up every 3 months with an NHS dentist.

DeskGnome · 27/04/2026 21:54

Every 6 months but private.

I put away some money towards it every week.

I’d rather go without a holiday and other luxuries.

JLou08 · 27/04/2026 21:54

I'm going less. There was 2 years between my last check ups. I got sick of paying £50 for someone to spend a few minutes looking in my mouth and telling me it is fine. It felt like such a waste of money.

SurferRona · 27/04/2026 21:56

DreamyJade · 27/04/2026 21:31

Our NHS dentist has just moved us from 6 monthly to 9 monthly checks.

@DreamyJade This is good! Too many NHS patients expect six monthly check ups, guidelines say an adult can go 2 years without a check up if they have good teeth. So your teeth are ok to go nine months. This frees up dentists to see more new patients.

It's really cheap to see a dentist in the UK. You should see how much dentistry costs in America! A checkup and clean is $200, crowns are $2000+, extractions are $1000+.
not seeing the dentist will lead to gum disease which could lead you losing all of your teeth. or getting cavities which could lead to extractions, root canals, crowns or fillings.

duchyorganiclettuce · 27/04/2026 21:59

I go every 1.5 years so I don't lose my prized NHS place. I take exceptional care of my teeth but if things go wrong later on in life it can cost thousands of pounds without NHS dental.

Moon30 · 27/04/2026 21:59

Me and my children have regular appointments, I have just been moved to yearly and my children are 6 monthly. My husband however missed some appointments and was removed from his dentists pre covid and has been unable to find another NHS dentist, he uses 111 for dental emergencies.

DominoQueen51 · 27/04/2026 22:00

Luckily I have an NHS dentist do yes

Allmarbleslost · 27/04/2026 22:02

Yes I see my NHS dentist once a year. They won't let me book more frequently than that but they see my dc every 9 months.

MaryBeardsShoes · 27/04/2026 22:03

Dental health is so important, so yes I still go (private, unfortunately). Once per year check up and once per year hygienist, but that’s because I have a good dental routine.

summerdaylazing · 27/04/2026 22:04

I’m on a payment plan which I refuse to budge off until it doesn’t exist
2 dentist check ups, as many appointments as I need if I have an issue, 2 hygiene appointments and all work included except lab fees (so extractions, fillings etc are included)
£27pm

Borborygmus · 27/04/2026 22:04

Yes, I went for my 6 monthly check up at my NHS dentist last week. However, to my horror, he has retired and sold the practice to a new lot who will only see me as a private patient. So that's a 73% price increase. But I'll carry on going regardless.

Netcurtainnelly · 27/04/2026 22:06

never. I've been to the dentist all my life. Teeth are important. I am going this week.

what is your dental routine.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 27/04/2026 22:07

No I pay privately now and will always prioritise it. Have spent upward of £7000 on my teeth in the last four years so will be looking after them religiously in the future.

Every 6 months for the last 50 years. I went last week. £27 for an NHS checkup. Much more important than a hair cut or a new t-shirt
