AIBU to ask for time off for new job induction?

I have got a new job offer and my notice period is in a month and I start new job few days after however new job wants me to go in on Wednesday for a Induction & sort out some paperwork. I want to be honest with my boss as she knows I’m leaving anyway but would this be seen as unreasonable

Have you got any annual leave?

Rubbleonthedouble2 · 27/04/2026 20:46

Is it the whole day?

I think I'd lie to be honest, make up an appointment and ask to take a day of AL because the location is far away or something.

I think it's unreasonable of the new job to expect it.
Take annual leave or sort out the paperwork first thing/last thing/ in your lunch break, but the induction will have to wait until you start.

Just take the day off, keep it simple. I don't understand why you would tell your manager.

Either your employer can accommodate the time off, or they can't and you'll have the reschedule the induction. There is no need to go into details.

Call in sick or take unpaid leave.

I have no annual leave left to take off. I don’t actually want to phone in sick/lie about being not well as it would be so obvious to Employer/Employee as they all know I’ve given in my notice so would it just be best to tell my Employer the truth about new job induction seeing as I’m leaving anyway.

As PP said, it's unreasonable of the new place to expect this. Have you signed a contract? Will you be paid for this day?
If you are going to do it I'd just be honest with your current place, take it as unpaid leave if you really need to.

Sam155320 · 27/04/2026 22:39

Planning to be honest & take as unpaid leave but hope it doesn’t upset my current Employer by me going to new job induction but even though old Employer knows I’m leaving anyway. Might phrase it as “can I take unpaid leave Weds as I have few things to sort out”
