if you work alongside someone, but they’re in a different department. I see him everyday though and we know each other. I was delivering some paper work to their department and told him something that was related to their side of the work, something positive. He said ooh I think you’re beautiful, in just sort of a casual tone. How would you interpret it. Wasn’t expecting it..

It's impossible to tell without a better retelling of what actually was said. My gut is that it means nothing. It's been said to me as well as I love you etc in relation to good news or feedback.

You're looking for something that isn't there.

MyBraveFace · 27/04/2026 18:48

Could be just the sort of gushy remark you sometimes get in the workplace instead of a straightforward thank you.

"I've emailed you those figures"
"Fantastic! You're a star!"

First post nails it as always.

you brought the good news he had been waiting for and he was giving a positive reaction.

It sounds like a 'you're amazing, I love you, marry me' type comments that in my team and pretty common when someone solves/ brings/ fetches/ deals with something. Or when just offering a biscuit. Hyperbole gets my team through some days.

You gave him positive feedback, he replied in kind by the sound of it.

Annoyingly my cousin says this if you offer him something he really wants, like tea or cake.

Then again he's very camp and wonderfully dramatic.

Did you return a compliment?

Yes, this is exactly how I would interpret it too. I have a colleague who says, ‘you’re an absolute beaut’, so it’s just a variation of this.

Mumstheword1983 · 27/04/2026 19:06

It was a compliment.

However when I lived in Australia this was commonly used to describe a good personality rather than someone good looking. So if someone was kind and lovely they would be described as beautiful. Both male and female.

Yes, I gave someone at work a slice of cake and the response was ‘will you marry me?’
It means nothing at all in that sort of context 😁

Was it wedding cake and he took the hint? 😁
