To think big dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the bus

There’s a dog on the bus that the owner literally cannot control. It’s snapping at people’s bags if it smells food, trying to run up the stairs and off the bus. It’s on a great big chain collar and still can’t be controlled.

AIBU to think this just shouldn’t be allowed? It’s made children cry as they’ve walked past, I’ve just seen someone who’s obviously very scared of dogs have to sprint past it and the owner has just laughed at them for being scared. It’s a big cane corso type dog, for reference.

MN Dog Hate Bingo Card
Dander
Jump up
Drool
Dog pram
Fur baby
Dog's anus
Licking bums
Waitresses hands
Nowhere is dog free
Ok except those 1,987 places you've listed, nowhere is dog free
But I don't want to have coffee in a Wetherspoons and don't see why I should
John Lewis
Running everywhere in the cafe
Cages
There were 5 dogs all sitting on chairs in the cafe wearing napkins and monocles
Everyone expected to admire their furbaby
Tie them up outside (like they do in Switzerland)
Perfectly ok shut in a car overnight
Dragged round shops

I woke up this morning wondering how long it would be before the dog hate thread and here it is.
How long before we get the "Grandmothers expected to provide care/grandfathers aren't" thread? Probably already up somewhere.

This made me laugh. And I actually don’t like dogs.

No you can’t ban all “big dogs” from buses - are they going to have height measures at bus stops like they do for rides at theme parks?!

Not sure if my dog is too big for a bus? He is a border collie and would just be lying under my seat.

small dogs can also be annoying, more likely to yap for one thing!

You also can’t ban dogs from all public transport, in my area for example we are rural and a lot of people use buses to go for walks with their dogs

However any dog on a bus should be well behaved and under control so the bus driver should be asking this passenger to get off ideally.

Dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the bus at all they are dirty and smelly

I think they get cleaned each night.

I usually take a mat for my dogs to sit on if we go on the bus, so they don’t get dirty from the floor. Nice of you to care though ☺️.

"There were 5 dogs all sitting on chairs in the cafe wearing napkins and monocles"

😂😂

Uncontrolled dogs no.

Consider making a complaint to the bus company? They usually have CCTV so if you give the route number and time/stop you got on at, they can identify which bus it was.

So are a lot of people on buses.

Can't argue with that 😂

I've sat next to far more loud, unpleasant smelling humans on buses, than I have dogs.

So you think that no blind person should be allowed on a bus then.
What a lovely ablist comment

The German Shepherd dog we had when I was a kid regularly travelled on buses and trains with us. She sat on the floor, tucked out of the way, and never bothered anyone. It was common for dogs to travel on public transport when I was a kid (1960s), as far fewer people could afford to run cars.

I've had 3 dogs: a lab cross and 2 lakeland terriers (but not all at once, I've never had more than 2 dogs at a time). They were all socialised on both buses and trains and travelled on them happily without kicking up a fuss or bothering other passengers.

I walked most of the South Downs Way with the lakelands, using public transport to get back to my car at the end of each stage. I've seen plenty of other people doing the same, and I've never seen any issues.

The problem lies with the owner having not trained the dog, not the overall principle.

When dd was a toddler we often used to get on the bus at the same time as an absolutely massive, fluffy german shepherd - always at dds eye level. He was beautifully behaved.
I have a dachsund. I certainly wouldn't subject bus users to him.

A dog stole my identity once and ran up thousands of pounds of credit card debt in my name and then it shit on my carpet.

365GelatoDaysAYear · 27/04/2026 19:53

Badly behaved dogs and humans should not be allowed on.

It is a joy to travel with the well-behaved ones.

The dog angel cleans dogs each night

My ‘big dog’ is an assistance dog.

without him I cannot access life.

he is better behaved than most humans. He just potters along besides alongs me - he’s not effing and geffing or shouting his mouth off - he’s not talking loudly hands free on his phone - he’s not listening to music or scrolling through inane tic toc videos with sound up and no headphones.

yes he’s a big boy - but he’s just there alongside me doing his job - keeping me safe.

it’s not the size of the dog that makes them good or bad - it is the training and the control that the owner has.

massive dogs can be completely unobtrusive - so often no one notices my boy in restaurants etc as he’s quietly laying under the table not causing any bother to anyone. And similarly little dogs can be yappy and out of control.

please don’t judge a dog purely by it’s size. Some of us are totally reliant on our ‘big dogs’ and they are more highly trained and better behaved than many adults and kids and certainly know how to behave on the bus!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 27/04/2026 21:43

Why were the children crying? Did he go for them?

Ireolu · 27/04/2026 21:45

Friend has an alaskan malamute. 40kg of dog. Best behaved, calmest dog i have ever met. Played lovely with all the children when we hung out. Not all big dogs are a problem. Owners are the issue not the dog.
