AIBU? Neighbours chimney

After some advice please! I moved house last year in the summer. I have a neighbour that my house is attached to (semi-detached) who’s really friendly, cuts my front grass when he does his, and is genuinely just a nice person. My issue is that he regularly uses his chimney and the smell is unbearable! I didn’t notice it when I first moved in as it was the summer, however over the winter
months it was very noticeable but I didn’t spend a huge amount of time in my garden and didn’t hang washing outside, have windows open etc.
Now that the weather is becoming warmer I’m opening windows and hanging washing outside to dry. His chimney is on daily still, mostly in the evenings and is blowing out white smoke which always comes in my direction due to the wind. I had my windows open this evening as it was a warm day and now my entire house smells like smoke. I have a loft conversion and his chimney is very close to that and I can smell smoke more up there I suppose because of the location. I can’t leave the window vents open as again the smell creeps in. I hang washing out but have had to bring it in before it’s dry due to his chimney blowing smoke in my garden. This is really becoming a nuisance however I don’t want a bad relationship with a neighbour. Any advice please?

Some councils have smoke free or smokless chimney rules have a look on your local website.

I have looked and I don’t fall into this within my area. The only rules would apply would be nuisance rules - however that would be a last resort and not sure how they can enforce anything either

If he is a friendly, considerate neighbour then I would have a chat with him. It may be that he can raise the chimney height slightly (this can make a lot of difference!) Sadly, there isn’t a lot else that can be done if he is burning properly dried wood. I do feel your pain as my neighbour has one and we can never open half our windows.

Could it be that his chimney needs sweeping? Maybe just ask him what he's burning and if it's been swept recently.
