AIBU to expect shopping centres to clean dog mess promptly

Do shopping centres not have cleaners ?? AIBU to think they should ?
I went last week and there was a lot of dog mess , went again today and it was all smeared throughout - hadn’t been cleaned in 4 days? I asked the security guard and he just shrugged and said no cleaners ?

Surely this is a health and safety issue and shopping centres need to be cleaned daily ?

No not isn’t up to the shopping center but the very disgusting dog owners who don’t feel the need to do it.

It was all in a line for about 50 metres clearly a dog has walked along dropping bits and it’s just all been walked in. If they are going to be dog friendly they surely expect this and should be cleaning it as sadly some owners aren’t responsible

Was it one of those outdoor shopping centers with brick flooring? I presume not an indoor shopping centre?!

7238SM · 25/04/2026 18:01

Do you mean inside a mall type shopping centre or outside? Are you sure it was dog faeces?

GrapeSorbet · 25/04/2026 18:02

indoor shopping centre and yes it was definitely dog poo

Why should anyone have to clean up dog mess from someone elses dog though?
You couldn't pay me enough to do it, it should squarely be on the owner, and people witnessing the shitting dog and the owner ignoring it making a scene to shame them to clean up.

They’ve decided to be dog friendly ? So they surely have a responsibility to clean it up if an owner is irresponsible enough not to ? It’s a health hazard. I assume they’d clean up blood or vomit if a person was unwell ? So why not this as well as they’ve made the choice to allow dogs in?

Surely your anger should be directed at the dog owner?

I don’t disagree.

But if they don’t clean it up, then if the shopping centre is going to allow dogs, I think they do need to clean it. Yes the owner is absolutely foul leaving it. But once that has happened, and it’s been left, it does need cleaning. And if the shopping centre doesn’t want to, they need to ban dogs.

I didn’t see them ! I just saw dog poo all over the floor in a line and then days later the same piles smeared about from being stepped in and walked through

And yet people wonder why we don’t want dogs everywhere…?

MajesticWhine · 25/04/2026 18:08

I wish people wouldn’t take their dogs to shopping centres (and hairdressers, pilates classes etc). I dont know why it’s become the norm. And I say this as a dog owner and dog lover. Just leave your ffing dog at home ffs.

Hankunamatata · 25/04/2026 18:17

Im sick of dogs in shops. I can cope with cafe etc. But tripping over bloody dogs in the high street shops is driving me insane

Buscobel · 25/04/2026 18:54

We were in a local garden centre yesterday and a dog had peed down one of the aisles. A poor lad was on the hunt for that blue paper roll stuff to deal with it. Apart from being unpleasant, it could be dangerous if someone slipped in it.

I think that if shops, cafes and restaurants are going to permit dogs, they’ll have to be prepared to clear up after them. I’ve seen signs in other garden centres about banning dogs if they mess or pee.

I can’t imagine it’s much fun for dogs to be dragged around an indoor shopping mall.

Arsewype · 25/04/2026 18:57

Often the people making the decision to be ‘dog friendly’ are senior mamagement, or some marketing team who thing it sounds great - knowing they won’t be the ones on the shop floor with a mop and bucket cleaning up the inevitable mess.

That would be the low paid shop staff.

Horrendous 🤢 urgh

newornotnew · 25/04/2026 18:59

An indoor shopping centre should be cleaned.

But also it's an inappropriate environment for dogs IMO.

Exactly

I think you should write a suitable letter of distain. Enough people complain and they'll sort themselves out. Yes, it's the dog owners fault but if the shopping centre allow dogs, they should clean up.
Interested to know which shopping centre this is as I haven't come across any. I've been to seaside towns and been surprised to see 'dogs welcome' in shops, including clothing shops. As a dog owner, it doesn't seem right. You can't control a dogs desire to pee. You could take it for an hour walk but they'll still find some wee to share.

Now, this is interesting twist on the usual Saturday thread of “why oh why are dogs allowed in cafes.”

Sadly, I’m just off to the dog friendly pub, so I won’t be able to fill my bingo card on this one…but I do hope you’ll all be able to come up with the typically bizarre ways DOGS HAVE RUINED YOUR LIFE!

Although I doubt anyone could beat the ‘invisible dog that went out of its way to trip me up’ on the last thread I saw. That was a corker 🤣

TreesinthePark · 25/04/2026 20:53

It will be someone on minimum wage who does the cleaning. If they use the equipment on dog mess they've effectively ruined it and can't clean anywhere else. Needs a manager to sort what equipment to use and probably arrange specialist disposal.

Yes it should be done but not by the usual shift cleaner as part of their normal work.

Not sure why you’re making a joke of it tbh.

it’s disgusting 🤮

I agree that the centre should clean it for the sake of shoppers and hygiene. But I don’t think that’s ok. I think the owner should be fined and banned. Ideally they need to track them down and make them clean it up. But doubt there’s anyone who can watch the cctv and do that in a quick enough time.

horrible for the poor staff who’ll eventually have to do it. Absolutely no need for dogs in shops.

So you'd be A-okay with dog shit smeared in an inside shopping centre, not cleaned up, stinking to high heaven and being a health hazard?

Not wanting to walk through literal shit in an inside shopping centre doesn't mean that you need to accuse the op of creating a goady thread for the sake of it. Dogs are cute. Dogs make a lot of people happy (including me). Dog shit in a shopping centre is grim and should be cleaned up, by ideally the owner but if not, the shopping centre. If they won't do it then dogs should not be allowed in the shopping centre. It's not difficult. Just basic hygiene sense.
