What do 16 year old do from the month of when they finish their exams to starting college?

Some get jobs or volunteer. Parkrun and library summer reading challenge are good.
Some of them stay in their rooms / houses a lot.
Some or them see friends or go to gigs.

I think it's quite a stressful period as so much hangs on GCSE's and where they end up in September.

Tshirtking · 24/04/2026 15:42

It's a stressful time waiting for exam resuits. Mine just relaxed and saw friends. They needed the break before college started

MyballsareSandy2015 · 24/04/2026 15:43

what was that volunteering/residential thing called .. mine did that

catipuss · 24/04/2026 15:44

Get a job if they can, they will want some money.

Scunnygal · 24/04/2026 15:46

summer camp thing for 15-17yr olds in Denmark for 3 weeks then gate crashing various family members’ holidays around Europe

arfidisarealthing · 24/04/2026 15:46

i volunteered for a month at a primary school and relaxed for the rest of the time!! its sooo stressful being in the limbo between exams and results/college, so i volunteered to distract myself from the feeling of limbo (and also because i wanted to be a primary teacher at the time!). i loved it but realised i am definitely not cut out for primary teaching!!! 😅

I have a DS of this age. He's planning to: go away with his mates for a week, come on the family holiday for 10 days, Duke of Edinburgh expedition takes up a few more days, a week's work experience, work (he has a job in a pub), watch the World Cup matches, meet his friends to play padel.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 24/04/2026 15:47

Both had PT jobs at 16 with extra shifts available to cover holidays etc if they wanted but 8 core hours a week. They always took a fortnight for a family summer holiday then spent their time seeing friends, going to the gym, day trips, chilling at home/down the beach etc.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/04/2026 15:48

When I was that age:

  • Not usually get up before 12
  • Plan my afternoon's TV viewing
  • Watch a lot of Wimbledon/Euro football tournament/cricket
  • Sunbathe if the weather was nice
  • Try and not do very much at all
  • Occasionally meet up with friends
  • Occasionally try to get a job (I got a Saturday job in a pub when I started sixth form)

Bliss!

DDs were much more active, were working and meeting up with friends and going to the gym, and went to Reading festival- far more productive than I was!

DogsLoveSwimming · 24/04/2026 15:49

My two had a lovely summer between finishing GCSEs and starting A levels.

Parties with friends
Holiday with us
Weekend away with cousins
Reading festival.
Slept a lot.
Pre reading, bridging work for A levels
Gym and running
Bought lots of clothes for college

Eta gaming! Lots of gaming!!!

TeenToTwenties · 24/04/2026 15:49

Part time work
Volunteer
Holidays with family
Relax
Get a head start on A levels
NCS scheme (DofE like)

My DD did a 3 week language summer camp abroad.

arethereanyleftatall · 24/04/2026 15:50

Reading festival. Holiday with friends (although you need to know someone with a holiday house for this, as they can’t rent anywhere till 18). Holiday with family. Work. Volunteer. Work experience. Relax. Hang out with friends. Exercise. Sleep (a lot).

Alwayswonderedwhy · 24/04/2026 15:51

Depends on the child. One of mine didn't do much, worked part time then stayed in a lot.
The other two were out with friends all the time.
A couple of weeks were taken up with a holiday too.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 24/04/2026 15:51

Not much! Mine met friends, gamed, slept and ate!

Not easy to get a job at 16 years old.

mumonthehill · 24/04/2026 15:53

Both mine worked, went on holiday and relaxed! It goes quite quickly really.

ConflictofInterest · 24/04/2026 15:53

I worked in the week at a supermarket (can you still do that at 16?) and volunteered on Saturdays. I'm hoping my teens can just chill out and have a break, I won't be pressuring them to do anything in particular like my parents did.

FruAashild · 24/04/2026 15:54

My edest two were living their best life, hanging out with friends, going on multiple holidays, reading novels, doing exercise, doing hobbies. Not stressed at all!

Daffodilsinthespring · 24/04/2026 15:54

Have a break.

Favouritefruits · 24/04/2026 15:57

Enjoy life! It’ll most likely be the last time they don’t need to work or have life stresses! Late nights and long lie ins! Don’t begrudge them a summer of fun!

CraftyNavySeal · 24/04/2026 15:58

Be truly free for one of the last times in their lives.

FloweryPenPot · 24/04/2026 15:59

They have a bloody good summer. Oh I miss having summers to myself, I should've gone into teaching... not saying its easy btw, just that they get lovely summers.

whiteroseredrose · 24/04/2026 15:59

Mine did NCS or National Citizenship Service which was a 4 week programme for a bargain price. There was a week of outward bound stuff, a residential week learning about finance, presentation skills etc from industries then two weeks on a local volunteering project.

The rest of the time they relaxed and went out with friends.

DS went away to Krakow with a few friends.

It passes very quickly believe it or not.

hellospring26 · 24/04/2026 16:06

Mine aren’t old enough but I think that was the best summer of my life. 1995. It was BAKING hot. Had a p/t job in Argos. Hung out with mates, particularly one with a pool. Went camping together at my parents static van - we had to have an adult with us, we stayed in pup tents. Beach. Discovered Hooch. BBQs. Wimbledon. Stables. Oasis.

Needmorelego · 24/04/2026 16:14

Have a bloody rest.
First one for about a decade.

Beachwalker66 · 24/04/2026 16:15
