I would also like to ban tellies in bedrooms, and speakerphones being used in the evening. And people who use walking sticks should not be allowed wooden flooring with no carpet.

Unfortunately living in close quarters means living with other people's sounds.

My friend lives in a ground floor flat, in a development that is apparently made out of cardboard. You can hear the people in the flat above no matter what they do - literally, everything (and it's worst in the bathroom). Should they not shit/piss/cook/talk in normal voices just because the builders were total cowboys who skimped on materials? Yes, it is a pain in the arse and my friend has had to put up with a lot, but living people make noise and to some extent it pays to try and minimise your stress reactions to it because you just end up making yourself miserable.

I agree though that there's a massive difference between everyday 'living' noise and deliberate, avoidable, antisocial noise.

hotcrossbunny · 20/06/2008 11:28

We are on the other side of this. Our neighbour complained that we are noisy

At first I was distraught and panic stricken, then we went through her list of grievances and realised she was being completely unreasonable.

She complained about our wooden floors(I have serious asthma and allergies), but we take our shoes off inside, and dd isn't allowed to jump about too much or bounce balls etc, so it can't be that bad. Normal household noise I would think. She also said she could hear our dogs claws clacking on the floorboards Silly me took him to the vet to see if they could be clipped shorter, but she said they were perfect length and did I need a certificate saying so???

We had a week of being excessively quiet and stressed, Dd's behaviour deteriorated because we were always on at her, so we are back to 'normal' and waiting the next complaint.

Dd will soon want to learn an instrument....that'll be fun

OrmIrian · 20/06/2008 11:32

And children under the age of 14.

SoMuchToBits · 20/06/2008 11:32

ps - I do live in a detached house, before anyone complains.

OrmIrian · 20/06/2008 11:33

And people having sex if they make loud noises and have a squeaky bed.

GodzillasBumcheek · 20/06/2008 11:40

Yes, normal noise is ok -
we also hear...
their water heater
their bath running
low level music which can only be heard in corridor/can be blocked out by putting our dehumidifier on
baby crying
children playing
talking
shouting/arguments
walking around in upstairs rooms
running upstairs (this i don't mind, it's when people are stomping up and down several times it becomes excessive)

None of these are a problem.

Oh yes, and we can hear them coughing, cooking, etc.
Chopping veggies in the kitchen sounds like open warfare!

People (ok, women) who have orgasms at 3 in the afternoon and whoop loudly like howler monkeys when they come should be BANNED.
Iused to live in the flat above one, thankfully pre-children!

GodzillasBumcheek · 20/06/2008 11:55

Yes, definately, i would like to ban all sex when i am either
a) watching tv
b)trying to sleep
or c)trying to get it on with DH as it puts me right off!

OP posts:
GodzillasBumcheek · 20/06/2008 11:56

I should specify - all sex other than that which i am involved in.

I remember one evening many years ago hearing next door with his latest gf. She was screaming like a banshee and shouting his name. Most off-putting as DH and I were trying to worm the cat at the time. V demoralising and I think it upset the cat too.

DC's practice on their musical instruments

Fortunately dh sticks to air guitar

I am quite happy to accept generous donations to enable a move from our humble terrace to a large detached house with grounds. Blenheim Palace or similar would do nicely, thankyou.

DustyTV · 20/06/2008 12:29

DH and I live in a terrace, and I love hearing the neighbours DC playing, talking, laughing and playing music.
We have never been quite around DD (Not overly loud, but normal) and she sleeps through anything, nothing wakes her. Seriously, don't tip toe round your DC when they are babies and they get used to the noise, that is one of the best pieces of advice we were given when we had DD.

GodzillasBumcheek, you cant expect people not to do all of the stuff you have mentioned that is unreasonable. But you can expect them to show some respect for other people around them and be curtious (SP?) to them with regards to noise.

ThriceWoe · 20/06/2008 15:13

We used to live in a terrace and next door came round to explain they were having a loft conversion. Fair enough - we'd had ours done (though long before they moved in). But once the loft was done, work started again and we discovered (they didn't actually tell us this rather important bit) that they were also having the entire house totally gutted, including knocking out all the fireplaces that adjoined our wall. They moved out but we were left with constant, major building work every weekday. I was working shifts at the time and had no chance of sleeping during the day....the last straw came when their builders turned up early one Saturday and starting crashing around! We contacted them to point out that there was a local bye-law forbidding work on a Saturday and the wife went ballistic and stormed off. They told the builders to pack up and go, which they did - but they left a radio blaring out at full volume, presumably intending it to keep playing for our benefit for the whole weekend. So we rang the neighbours back and told them to come and turn it off. They did, thank heavens. But boy, were relations frosty between us after that (we moved out not long after).

pointydog · 20/06/2008 15:20

godzilla, it's now time for you to move out of a terrace.

Bumdiddley · 20/06/2008 15:23

I really want to say something about my terrace experiences but the mental picture of Godzilla's Bumcheek keeps getting in the way....

MamaG · 20/06/2008 15:27

GB, YANBU at all - my neighbours sound v similar to yours. Don't mind up to, say 8pm, but after that it really gets my goat

LissyD · 20/06/2008 15:42

Like someone said, I love listening to the daft arguments next doors teenagers have and thier music. I'm sure they hear just as much from our parties and baby and its not like they are doing it on purpose. It does worry me slightly the amount of hammer banging that comes from the other side, but only cos I can't think of anything that would need that much nails!

GodzillasBumcheek · 21/06/2008 22:49

Lol @ evryone who says move out of my terrace...i would love to!

Lol even MORE at everyone who thought i was totally serious about wanting to ban everything

But seriously, it may be unreasonable, but i DO get migraines from excessive noise, and although i could probably train myself not to get too upset about normal daytime noise, when it gets loud enough to hear it every room, it causes me physical pain. I don't think it's unreasonable to want not to be in agony, just because my neighbour doesn't think to keep it fairly low - or wear headphones. I also think that if you are lucky enough to find you/a family member have a talent for a musical instrument you should ask when the best time would be for you to practise...and be prepared that occaisionally you might have to skip a day if your neighbour is ill. DustyTV is right - a bit of courtesy is all it takes.

I live in a back to back so have neighbours on three sides. One side shags very loudly, the other plays the piano (very nicely) - neither of which I mind too much. But the third (who I think must be students) roll in at 2am and crank up some marilyn manson rubbish. That really pisses me off.
