AIBU to call 999 after seeing a baby alone in a car?

VividMentor · 23/04/2026 19:29

I saw a baby left alone in a car in a car park of a Sainsbury's, no one around, I was leaving the trolley to put my son in my car, and I noticed a baby in the car seat, alone in the car. I went inside the store a told security, then came out and felt very uncomfortable leaving like that, so I called 999. By the time I finished the call, I went back inside the shop to check if security tracked the parents, they didn't. Went back to the car, got a call from 999 asking me to call them if the parents came back, which a did a while later when the mother approached the car. Then she called the father and he arrived a minute later very angry at me for calling. I explained that I waited, no one showed up and I called, what if no one came back? What if, considering the windows were open, someone took the baby? Also, if they were 2 people, why didn't the mother stay in the car since the only needed bread apparently? Police arrived and I left after talking to them, but this father looked very angry. Did I do the wrong thing here? That baby was alone in the car for a good 30 minutes.

You were absolutely correct

Judecb · Yesterday 17:50

You 100% did the right thing. I would have broken a window! Heat inside a car builds up really quickly. I can't believe someone would do this!!

Babies die in hot cars

Didimum · Yesterday 17:58

They were angry because they were embarrassed. 30 minutes is too long. 2-3 minutes with an older baby while you go to do something like pop your trolley back, fine. It was very hot today too – where I am at least.

BeZippyZebra · Yesterday 18:00

He was angry coz they got caught, how many other times have they just popped somewhere and left baby alone in the car.
You did the right thing.

I have called police for exactly same thing. Shop staff at aldi was not interested and so i hung around for good 15 mins before calling police. I had to give car registration and police said I was right to call as they would be visiting the parents about it. Parent did turn up as I was on phone and was going mad at me. I dont regret calling police though

Vargas · Yesterday 18:03

WTF - I hope the police referred them to social services. You absolutely did the right thing OP. People are baffling.

GrannyDooun · Yesterday 18:14

VividMentor - You absolutely did the right thing and don’t ever doubt that you didn’t.

A little one can get into trouble when they are on their own in seconds, so you being there at that exact time was meant to be.

Hold your head up high and bask in the admiration I and others have for your swift action.

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · Yesterday 18:49

Of course you did the right thing!
dear God, what next?

You absolutely did the right thing.

He is angry as he got caught out!

Buzzingabout · Yesterday 19:01

You were absolutely right. I never left my son alone in the car for one minute ever when he was a baby up to teen t
years.

Poor baby left on car alone for 30 minutes. You absolutely did the correct thing and I would do the same. I saw a toddler strapped into a car seat outside a gym once and thought it odd so waited for a bit then to ook number plate and went inside gym to report. The manager sent a message through loud speaker system with number plate and toddler in car alone. Unbelievably a women came out from gym she had been using gym equipment and said her toddler did not mind waiting alone and she was only going to be 45 minutes.

You did the right thing.. my friend works in a beauty shop which has sunbeds a mum came in to use a sunbed for 12mins .. myself and another women saw a child in the car climbing all over the inside of a 4 by 4 crying her little eyes out.
She was on the front seat would only of had to open the door straight onto a road... I was absolutely livid..

You did the right thing 💯

I think if it’s 2 mins outside a Tesco express it’s a bit different. 30 mins alone is mad????

Definitely not good to leave a baby alone for any length of time in a car by themselves unattended.

Mcoco · Yesterday 19:20

Well done OP. They won't do something so dangerous again. You absolutely were right.

I'm an ex police 999 call handler.
I would have graded this incident 'Emergency' for police to attend on blue lights.
Was the weather warm too?

VimFuego101 · Yesterday 19:35

You did exactly the right thing. Shocking lack of judgement on the parents part! There were two of them FFS, why didn’t one stay in the car?

TheZanyScroller · Yesterday 20:11

You did 100% the thing. It's the so called parents who should be feeling bad. Shame on them for being irresponsible. They should be thankful because as you stet4d in your message they left the window open in the car as well and that baby could have easily been taken. They created an opportunity and I hope they have learned never to do that again and put their baby at risk of serious harm.

NewLifter · Yesterday 20:18

I understand you overthinking this op, but I think you were very brave and should be proud that you safeguarded a baby. Hopefully the parents will think twice next time.

GabriellaFaith · Yesterday 20:36

You were absolutely in the right! And I can't believe there was 2 of them as well! That's just lazy!

VividMentor · Yesterday 21:32

They took about 20 min to arrive and they appeared very calm, no lights etc

100% the right thing to do.

starafuzina · Yesterday 21:52

You did the right thing. There have been really sad cases where people have accidentally left their babies in cars in hot days because they FORGOT about them that have ended tragically. Realise that wasn’t what happened in this case but worth mentioning. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility as others have said.

Honestly, yes, I thought I fucked up.

You most definitely did not fuck it up.
The parents fucked up massively. No way do you leave any child in a car on its own never mind a baby.
Well done your actions were 100% correct.
